Saga Home Insurance.

I had my Saga home buildings/contents renewal enclosed with their 'saga Price Guarantee'....i.e "if you receive a lower like for like quote we'll beat it"

Well i have got a lower quote by £30.00 using a comparison site.

Would they beat it?

No chance! They wouldnt even match it.Cutting off their nose to spite their face comes to mind.

So,its goodbye and good luck saga.My money is going elsewhere.

Strange, I've twice used their "price promise" with car insurance. The last one was for over £30 and they did what it says on the tin - beat it by £1.
    Did they give a reason?
  • The only reason the girl gave me was that on the buildings insurance they give cover of £500,000.Therefore the quote isn't 'like for like' as the other insurer covered me for the actual value of my house which is less than £500,000.

I told her that it was pointless having cover for £500,000 if my house is worth £170,000,but she reiterated that she couldn't quote for a lower house value as their policies have this 'blanket' cover of £500,000.She explained it was beneficial for me if house prices go up next year!!!

If i was confident that my house may go up in value by 200% i may have been tempted, but i think she is a little naive................or just a saleswoman.

Anyway i told her i would go with a Company that covers the realistic current value. She wouldnt budge on the price.

I wouldn't have thought that the policies in question cover the market value of the properties, rather the cost of rebuilding them.

That is lame. Although blanket cover of £500K ensures that you don't inadvertently under-insure your property, they're not going to pay you half a million squid if your home is totally destroyed - unless that is the cost of rebuilding it.

They'll pay out the exactly same as the other insurer (assuming you haven't under insured with them) which is the rebuild costs including demolition and site clearance. As you've walked I don't suppose there is anything you can do but I think I might have escalated it to her supervisors.

I thought they might try to use things like superior use abroad and new car cover as "wriggle room" on their car insurance but in both instances providing the cover and excesses were the same they reduced their price to retain the business.

Above true. They will only beat the renewal quote.
