Exchanging DVD Rom for DVD 'Burner'

At the moment I have a DVD rom and a DVD 'Burner' on my PC. The Rom is playing up and needs replacing. Is there any problem just replacing it with another 'burner' (I thought it a suitable time to add a dual layer burner as my present one is single layer). Incidentally the burner I was thinking of is an LG GSA 4167 'OEM' model and comes without any software.
Any problems I should be aware of?

Can't see that you should have any problems with this.

Out of curiosity how old is your DVD ROM drive? What make and model is it and how is it playing up? May be handy for other people to know.

No problem at all - should cost you less than £30.

One of your drives will be 'master' (probably the DVD Rom) and the other will be 'slave'

Just make sure you apply the correct 'jumper' settings on the back of the drive next to the power/data sockets, i.e. if the original DVD Rom is set to 'master' then make sure the replacement is also. (and likewise if the original was 'slave' then select that jumper setting for the new one). It is slightly fiddly but you get a little diagram normally to show you and use a pair of tweezers to put the jumper in the setting that corresponds. If you get it wrong you won't blow anything up , it simply wouldn't work.

It sounds much worse than it is!

Thank you both. I feel more confident having a go now. Just got to find the drivers for the LG.
The DVD Rom is a Sony DDU 1621. I have found that occasionally it simply refuses to run a dvd (mostly data dvd's) which run fine on my DVD 'Writer'
(and it's a good excuse to get a dual layer 'writer')
