DFS PPI and Sofa Insurance

A couple of years ago my husband and I bought 2 sofas from DFS. I was very aware of the tricks they like to pull so thought I was prepared - how wrong was I!
Last week I phoned them up as our cat had got locked in the lounge and had shredded the arms of the sofas. We had taken out the optional insurance for this very reason because it had happened before. At the time of purchase we had specifically asked if the insurance would cover this and they said it definitely would and made out how easy it was to get them to come out and repair it. The girl I spoke to on the phone said that the insurance we had actually paid for was just for stains and they refused to help us. What would we need stain insurance for on 2 black leather wipe clean sofas?!
I was so angry because we had already been ripped off with the payment protection insurance which we had refused (as we actually had the cash in the bank at the time, we just wanted to take advantage of the year payment free and 0% interest) but when the payments came out of the bank after the year they had added it on!!
This was one of the things I was looking out for and made sure that we refused it. Frustratingly we can't find the paperwork since our office was turned into a nursery so we have no proof.
Is there anything I can do about this??

Hi there
Yes write to complain and also request they send you a full copy of all phone recordings, this may help when this was sold to you from the start as well, if the discussion was about this protecting you for everything.
You need to keep writing to them until they resolved this in your favour, or until they give details of the financial ombudsman service (FOS), they should enclose these details in the final response.
(You write to the ones that sold you the finance)
Post by recorded delivery. This is your proof of posting, and they have 8 weeks in full to respond, however, if they do not respond at all by the 8 weeks, your entitled to take it to the ombudsman as well.

Sorry forgot to mention, you can request for the paperwork by requesting for a Subject Access Request (SAR), they have 40 days to comply and send everything they still hold on your account, there is a £10 charge for this payable by cheque or postal order payment, again post by recorded delivery to ensure the request reaches them.
The template letter for this is on this link here:;)

When they sold you this was it by a phone call?
Ask for a copy of the tel recordings?
How long ago was it that you taken this out?
Sorry for the questions, just double checking.
If you still have the policy, also check it out and any small print etc, not sure but you may also be able to track the details of their cover online, try by googling this in.;)The one and only "Dizzy Di"
