As I suspected its never straight forward. They sent out an OpenReach engineer yesterday who checked from the exchange to the mast, no problems, so he needs to get into the property, we were both at work so I have to make another appointment.

I guarantee they find some sort of old cabling or work on our property that they argue I will have to pay for, oh well I will make another appointment. Even more worrying, I now appear to have no dialtone whatsoever, rather than the crackling.

If the fault is on your property it's still OR's problem, as long as the fault is not user inflicted (like you've damaged the cable when decorating). The network belongs to BT up to and including the master socket, so relax.

We has an electrician install a plug socket behind where we now have the television a while back, but the fault with the line didn't coincide with the broadband stopping working. Oh well I'll just have to see.
