Car Hire In Miami

Need a bit of help. I'm travelling out with the folks at the end of June to Miami for my cousin's wedding, and I intend to hire a car whilst I'm out there. Up until now I've been looking at full size cars like a Ford Taurus and Dodge Intrepid that apparently will comfortably accomodate 3 adults and their luggage. I've even had an offer of a free upgrade to Premium. However I spoke to the folks yesterday and they asked whether we needed such a big car, as we maybe could put a small suitcase inside the car on the backseat.

Now I'm confused. What size of car do I go for? Is it better to take the bigger car for an extra £40-£50 (£3 - 3.50/day)? Or could we get by with an Intermediate car?

Please help me, as I really want to get this sorted sooner rather than later.:(

    American cars are 'big'!

Even an intermediate should be ok for you, but they are all saloons usually so be careful about how big your luggage is.

Make sure you follow the links on this site about finding car hire in the US - I saved a fortune!

An extra £3 between you is not worth saving, go for the bigger car, https://www.dollar.co.uk can be good.

Yeah, I've been using travelsupermarket.com recently and i've found it really useful. You've also hit on my problem. There's going to to be three of us traveling out for two weeks, and with a wedding in the middle (so extra non-holiday stuff for that), so we're going to have at least two big cases, a medium to medium/small case and other assorted bags (e.g. hat box for my Ma most probably!). But then again, we're only going to be fully loaded when we're going to and from the airport. Big car is the safe option and as you say richardw, £3 a day is no great shakes, but the biggest car i've driven on a regular basis over here is a Mondeo hatchback, so I don't know whether an American 'supercar' will be difficult to to drive.

Driving is easy in Miami/Fort Laurderdale, I've done it, if you are OK with a Mondeo, you'll be fine. BTW clothing and accessories are cheap in the US, might be easier buying stuff when you are there and not taking too much with you.

Thanks for that. I was in California about a year and a half back for three weeks, but then I hired a Chevy Cavalier because it was just me. Do you think I'm better going for a Full size for cheaper or spending a little more and getting the free upgrade to a Premium?

  • Just spoke to a few insurance companies and they all seem to be advising on an Intermediate car, and if I need to, upgrade at my destination. Seems fair enough.
