Advice from a PC Company was incorrect, what can I Do?

My friend emailed a company he bought his PC off to ask them if a certain Processor would work on his Motherboard he had. They advised him that it would and to give them a call for a quote, he did call them and the price they quoted was too much. So with their advice he went to eBuyer and purchased one on line.

However, it turns out that it isn't the correct one for his motherboard, and eBuyer will not take it back. He has emailed the company who gave him the advice and they said the following...

Hello
I have checked this for you and seems I may have been misinformed, I was made aware that this board would support the processor if the BIOS was flashed to the latest version before installing.
However I have now been further informed by my colleague this is not the case and that the board does not support this processor at all.
Many apologies that the incorrect information was given in this case, I can confirm however that the E6700 and X6800 processors would be fully supported on your board.
If we can assist you any further, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Many Thanks
Darrin Cooper

Can he claim any money back from the guy who gave him the information? any advice would be greatly received.

No! Since he has no contract with them, absolutely not.

    Is this a serious question?
Did he pay for services to this other company for this advice? Nope
I would also be willig to bet the board would in fact work if flashed.

It seems not so how can there be a complaint?

What a tacky question. Bloke gives you advice in good faith. You take advice but go away and buy cheaper and then look for recompense from the original guy?

Good reason not to be helpful.

Was a valid question, I was just seeing if he had any comeback! No need for you all to bite me head off  And it wasn't me it was a mate.. I did post that in the OP.

And Further to that, He has a 2yr agreement with them to maintain his PC as they built it for them, which I guess includes advice seen as he's paid for that!

I actually don't think it was a valid question at all. An opportunistic attempt at absolving your mate's failure to do simple research when making a purchase.

I very much doubt the "2yr agreement" is of a consultancy nature where he can just rock up and ask the odd question with full recourse for an incorrect answer.

I would also suspect that the agree is now void due to the modification.
