Buying from a franchised dealer

If you buy a car from a franchised dealer, do you need to go through all the HPI checks etc...or will they have done that themselves?

Not necessarily - depending where the car came from they may just have some sort of indemnity insurance to cover any problems.

They won't be insulted if you ask them, and if they say the car has been checked, ask them to confirm that in writing. Otherwise maybe you can negotiate a discount to cover the cost of you doing your own checks.

Another question...how should I pay (assuming I have cash)

HPI state that a bankers draft is better than cash, do they mean physical cash? because a debit card (the dealers preferred method) will also be traceable, won't it?

Some garages simply won't take cash (security reasons), so debit card will be fine (especially if dealer says so!). And the transaction shows up on your bank account as proof of payment!
