taking off roof and adding height

Hi all
I have a semi built in 1909, in the northwest, with a loft space not high enough to convert as is. My idea would be to take roof off add a couple of feet to the outside walls and put a new roof on to create a large bedroom with ensuite. The ceilings in the landing are high enough to accomodate another turn in the stairway. My adjoining neighbours are interested in doing same. My question is ball park figure (know its a big ask) to do the work to building regs i.e. shell that my husband, who is a spark and handy too, can finish. Am I looking at £20K, £50k, impossible or uneconomical?

Not sure if this helps, but I've been given rough quotes of about £12k to rebuild an exisiting utility area. About a quarter of that cost is a result of new foundations and rebuild for a wall about 13 feet in length.
My point is that BC will insist on exposing the existing foundations as they will need to check they can take the extra weight. So I'm guessing it's going to be more like £50k.0 -
And what about planning permission? You'd be raising the roof line of part of a street which might not be acceptable to many LA's. I'd check that with them first before you cost anything else out.No free lunch, and no free laptop

its virtually unheard of to raise a roof like you want to. PP, foundations, and the cost usually put a stop to it. even worse with a semi.
far better to find another home for the extra 20k/50k.
planning depts very rarely allow roof lines to be raised, hence all the dormer windows you see.Get some gorm.0 -
There is a detached near me that has done this, professionally done but it looks hideous - I really would think about how it will look externally and whether it would add or detract value. Could you lower the internal ceilings instead and add a dormer on in a strategic place to give you the room you need ?0
