Red wine

Options
Wasn't sure where to post this, but need some advice on a good red wine.

It's my Boss' 60th birthday soon and asked his wife what he would like, which she replied he likes a good bottle of red wine.

I don't have a clue about wine, so really don't know which one to buy

I would like a really decent bottle, not too expensive, that he's gonna be impressed with. Preferably from somewhere like Tesco so it's easy for me to find! :D

Can anyone suggest one please?

Many thanks in advance

  • Wine is very personal, a bottle costing £3 is the same as £300 as long as you like the taste, don't believe the snobs. For me you can't go wrong with a bottle of chateauneuf du pape which you can get from Tescos for about £12. Get the proper one and not Tesco's finest, as it isn't.

Hi there, Im crap at wine, but my MIL knows all about it (I just drink it LOL) She raves about St Emillion 1999 or 2000 (the years) lovely drop! I have a St emillion 1999 in my cellar just calling to me...

Also, our business class wine on my old airline was 'Morgon' (about £7.99) and the businessmen (especially the French) loved it.

Hope you find something, but you wont go wrong with those I mentioned!

Suggest you go to Oddbins or local independent wine merchant, tell them your price range and ask them to recommend a bottle. Oddbins staff usually v helpful.

Im not a wine snob, I buy whatever is on offer in tesco personally, but to buy a present for someone who is "into" wine. I wouldnt want to risk a tesco bottle on them! If you want to really impress the boss I would make the effort to go elsewhere tbh.

    My fave too!!

Cant go wrong with this one!
Life is a rollercoaster.....ya just gotta ride it:whistle:
  • I agree with the wine merchant comment. Great bottle when we went recenlty, was not cheap at around the £10 mark, but then I don't do cheap wine. I am a wine snob.

I like to buy Laithwaites wine when I have a voucher code to use. In fact the last party I took a couple of bottles to everyone said how nice my bottles of wine were, one of the best they had tasted. I said "At over £10 a bottle I should hope so!"

I have some nasty Tesco (free when the points were on offer) for the next party. :) They are gonna have a shock ;)

Seriously though, I would see a merchant and not take the risk in Tesco. Especially if he knows his wines.

But wine is personal. Can she give you a bit more information as the grapes and regions are very different. Not all reds are the same.

a very good red wine is a Barolo. Never cheap but always exquisite and anyone who appreciates a 'good bottle of red wine' will always be impressed with, and delighted to receive, a bottle of Barolo. Barolo is an Italian wine, one of many to claim the title "Wine of kings, and king of wines".

Tesco do a couple at £9.99 and £14.99.

I also say go with Laithwaites.

For something impressive and New World go with an Argentine Malbec, Opi Malbec 08 is particular is awesome and a Decanter trophy winner. Only £6.99 a btl too.

Or for Old World go with Chateau Gachon 05 (the best year for Bdx in decades) - £12ish a btl.
  • I would say go to wine merchant too as they are more likely to give you good advise. Then again it also depends on what kind of taste your boss prefers. Personally I love Barolo, Rioja ( pronounced as ree oh hah) & Chianti. To me Barolo is top :D. 1999 & 2003 were good year for red wine. Some people are under the impression that screw top wine are cheap, so you might want to avoid that? There is also a belief about the bottle's dimple.... the deeper it is, the better the wine ;)
