  • What i meant was unlike HSA it doesnt pay out for Dental, Opticians, Day visits etc. It only pays out for Overnight stays in Hospital.

Its a plan called the triple hospital plan and if you look on the website youll see what it covers under the policy.

They also do a cancer care plan, and a disabling injuries plan.

The annoying thing for me is that for over 65s the amount paid out is cut massivly yet when taking the policy out they still pay a full premium.

My father in law has paid into this since the year 2000 at least paying 105.00 a month for 2 plans which equates to over 24000. Over that time hes never claimed and didnt know what he was paying for yet hes been in hospital for 6 long stays since then. When weve sorted through his stuff weve found this and theyll let us claim for the last 2 times however they wont guarentee theyll pay out for his last stay as it was 12months ago. What he thought he was getting was a charity draw and the letters weve found state hes won a cash prize but guess what.....hes never had one.

After this claim has been sorted im going to contact someone about everything that ive found.

Il give more info here afterwards!

HSA pays out for hospital stays as well.

Yes, it does, but there's an upper limit depending on your contribution level and a maximum per year. DH did not get paid when he went in for surgery in February because he'd already had the max the previous October.

They have also closed down the loophole that we've benefited from. The fact that we both subscribe means that we each get paid - normally it is 50% of the total. Another reason why we wouldn't come out of it because we'd never get back with the same conditions. I don't think we could get back in at all, but really, it's peanuts compared with what we've had out of it over the years.

My mother had plans with Hospital Plan for years. They did pay out and kept to the terms, but as you say they substantially reduce payouts for people over a certain age even though premiums stay the same.

And another point to be aware of is that psychiatric or psychogeriatric inpatient care - not uncommon with dementia - is completely excluded.

I wrote to them to cancel on my mother's behalf saying that I had POA (which I do). They cancelled the policies no problem and did not require evidence of the POA.
  • I am having the same problem, my uncle has just died in hospital, he lived alone with no family only us, he was alcoholic and lived on pensions. Yet he has been allowed to accrue massive debts, electric chair, electric bed, leather sofa, bulk orders of wine monthly, collectors plates, coins, charities etc etc it seems he has been targeted by every type of scam going, plus payments to the Hospital plan going back years. Trouble is I do not know if he ever made a claim and I do not have his most recent policy numbers? I contacted the hospital plan people last week by e-mail and they replied saying they are dealing with my query, but I have not heard anything since? I do not know if he is even covered, I got a phone call from the hospital saying he had a fall and was admitted, I went to see him and he seemed very poorly to me, but his sister phoned from America and they told her he would soon be home. A few days later I was asked to go back because he was worse, I got there ten minutes too late ,he had passed away, the death certificate states the main cause as pneumonia?
  • Following kjm999 in October 2009 (long time ago!) I find myself in a similar position. My elderly Mum has paid thousands of pounds to this company over years without understanding. She filled in an unsolicited mailshot prize draw which was in fact a heavily disguised Direct Debit Mandate.
I would like to know if anyone else is suffering this ?? Also, has kjm999 followed it up in any way as I would like to get this scam out in the open!

This is my first posting so apologies if I inadvertently breach etiquette. I am trying to help my elderly mother with her paper work, she has dementia. This is a bit over whelming and I am desperate for sound advice.

She has a host of policies for Hospital plan Insurance Services for which she is paying over £30 a month. She has been paying this for years. Has anyone any experience of this company as it looks like a scam to me. Any advice would be gratefully received. I am tempted to cancel them all but she has been paying for years, can I complain? Or claim? I did search for other posts on this company but couldn't find them
  • HI I wish I had been a member of the forum when you first posted this warning! my dear late father had signed up for them for years, paying them a small fortune over the years.

however at 84, after he fell down the stairs and rapidly developed severe dementia 10 days later, We tried to make a claim for mental incapacity caused by the fall but they have insisted that he had dementia already. This is despite the evidence that he was fully lucid the day before the fall, having driven to the doctors about a stomach complaint and on the day of the fall I had a very enjoyable long conversation with him. Indeed he was a retired minister of the Baptist church and was still involved in religious activities at times even helping at the local Christian respite centre.

Hospital plan referred the claim to something called doctors chambers who seem to be just agents of the insurance company as they sided with them, ignoring the evidence in the medical history that he had never had any problems with memory etc. Indeed after when I got copies of his prior medical history there was nothing to give any evidence of that at all. There was only an assumption from some of the specialists who he had seem him AFTER the fall that he had had a prior history of memory problems. I don’t know where they got that from as they had never seen him before the fall.

So a warning to others that if you need to make a claim it may not be that easy!. I’m in the process of contesting the claim but I’m told that I need to employ a consultant to provide a different report, however Im trying to get them to request doctor’s chambers to redo the original report this time taking into account the facts in the medical history and also statements from people who knew him before and after the fall.

If this doesn’t work and I have to employ a consultant I’m not sure what this is likely to cost or if it will be worth the expense. If anyone else has any suggestions or experience in this area that would be much appreciated!.

Thanks and good luck with hospital plan if your loved ones are still paying them! Of course this may not be a typical example, to be fair they have always paid out readily for the days he previously had to spend time in hospital. It may be that they are less eager to pay out on the disabling injury cover part of the policy?

ps earlier on i also found something about this on talking point, an alzheimers supoort site so put a similar comment/question on that.
  • DH and I have been paying into HSA (now called Simply Health) for many years, just like your Mum. He's paid into it since he was an apprentice, I have since I was a student nurse. If we cancelled it now we couldn't rejoin because of age, but we've had back almost every penny-piece we ever paid in. Read the paperwork of what your Mum's plan actually covers. Our HSA policy covers dental, optical, as well as any hospital treatment.

Me too! I paid five bob a month to the Leeds Hospital Fund as a student nurse. They are now SimplyHealth and I can't praise them enough. I am currently having chemo and they have paid out without quibble and, what's more, have an 0800 number to ring.

Obviously, I don't know what your mum's policies are or what they cover, but I think you need to try and find out. are there phone numbers to ring?
