Oh where to go with kids

Can't afford a holiday next week in half term, but noticed the travelodge deals, ok I won't get a room for £10 but I will for £30, which for my girls would be a treat.
I'm in Nottingham and will travel up to 3 hours, looking for a decent place with something nearby, zoo or museum, not too expensive but something that will keep us busy for a day, my children are 3-11 any ideas, lesser known places will probably be better than the city centres as the prices for the travel lodges are cheaper the further away from a city you are.

How about Manchester? There are a few rooms still seem to be available in/near the city centre for around the £35 mark.

The public transport system there is good and you could visit The Manchester Museum http://www.museum.manchester.ac.uk/ or the Museum of Science and Industry http://www.mosi.org.uk/ or URBIS http://www.urbis.org.uk/ These are all free.
There is also a "big wheel" that maybe you could go on in the city centre.0 -
Well I think Manchester wins, I found a holiday inn for £49 including breakfast, so for an extra £15 I think its worth it, there is free parking, and its three miles from the city - does that sound good?
Never done an overnight city stay before
