Critical Illness Advice pls?

  • Janet do yourself a favour before you put in your claim, make sure you prepare everything before you put it in, also prepare for the IC to decline it from the word go.

I would suggest approaching your GP and or Consultants to confirm (in their opinion) if your claim is valid, i.e have they diagnosed what you are claiming for.

I would also suggest you say to your medical team (if they agree with the diagnosis etc) that although you have been diagnosed by them you are putting in an CI claim and inform them of impeding correspondence from the IC.

I would be taking a copy of the joint GP-ABI guidelines and pointing out to them that although the IC will approach the Doctors for your Full Medical Records, this is against the joint guidelines as set down in section 4, please highlight this to them. May I suggest that you have no problems what so ever in the Doctors providing the IC with all RELEVANT medical history.

Be aware that the IC’s have a habit of making up their own medical definitions, and insisting that all criteria’s within those definitions are met.

These definitions are suggested to them by their protectors the ABI, these definition are all singing all dancing definitions, some even have bells on !!!!

    Anyway good look.

    Hi

Sorry to hear you have been having problems. We have just put a critical illness claim following my husband having a stroke. Would you mind telling me why they rejected yours? Was it that they queried the diagnosis or because they say you didn't disclose your full medical history. Thanks and good luck.

They queried the diagnosis, the fact that my condition has improved and my medical history. It'll depend on your Insurance Company and their own definitition. Standard Life paid out quickly, no problems. Hope you have more of a Standard Life experience than a Friend's Provident one!
  • Thanks for that. Glad to hear you have improved. We are with Legal and General and the policy stipulates stroke with permanent neurological damage. It doesn't mention persistent symptoms so, given that my husband had a clear diagnosis, maybe we have some hope - I have presumed that, given that the stroke has, by definition, caused an area of the brain to die, there is permanent neurological damage even though he has fortunately made some improvement. We are with L & G.
  • Iam not sure if this helps, but my IC turned down my CI claim after a CVA/Stroke 3 years ago. They said that I had failed to disclose info.

After 2 years and 10 months of fighting and going through the Financial Ombudsman Service I final received my full claim as the FO ruled the non disclosure was innocent.

    It is worth considering

  • I think you've misunderstood some of the posts above Badger. Quietheart's claim was turned down because the IC said he/she didn't meet the criteria as set out in the terms and conditions of the policy, not because of non-disclosure.

The non-disclosure was a separate issue.
