headstone

my mother in law's ashes are being interred in an old family grave in a cemetary. The headstone is very weatherbeaten/dirty. What could we clean it with? Presumably best to speak to the management of the cemetary but just thought someone might have done this... I presume we won't have access to any water. Many thanks

Depends on what stone it is made of. If it is polished granite or marble and is just covered in algae or similar, then just take a bottle of any sort of household cleaner and either a scrubbing brush or green scourer. If its an older unpolished rough stone with lichen etc over it, then just leave it. It's meant to look like that when it weathers.

theres always water on grave sites. you will see standpipes every so often.
best method of cleaning off old stone is with a jetwash. not sure if they will let you use one though.
you can hire a portable machine.

Are you getting MIL's details added to it by a mason? I would ask them if you are. But generaly its best left alone to weather in nicely.

There's a lot of info about cleaning headstones on various websites though can't remember any off hand.
I know you have to be careful with them but does depend what its made of.
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !
