looking for a website that'll give me some decent advice on installing a home wired network....not found anthing grea t yet...anyone any ideas?

There's not really much to it. Get an ADSL modem router* which has a number of ethernet ports on it (invariably 4); connect a PC up to one of the ports with an ethernet patch cable, keep going until no more PCs or ports. All PCs should now be able to access the internet.

If you want to form a proper workgroup, where each PC can see and access the files on all the others, that's a lot more work...

* unless you're on cable. It can be a wireless router on non-wireless, both usually have 4 ethernet ports.

more thinking about the wiring point view....taking the wires under the floor, installing sockets in the wall, what sort of wires/where to get from..

looking at putting ADSL router in understairs cupboard + having 1 socket upstairs, 1 in downstairs office + 1 next to tv in living room

Cat 5 wires plugs and sockets.

The problem you will have is the termination of wires and sockets though...that needs special tools like a crimper for the plugs (which are a !!!!!! to wire up and very fiddly)...so most of us also need a tester to make sure they are connecting well too.

There is a very good reasont hat wireless is so popular in houses ...it's much easier.

https://www.cpc.co.uk have the hardware and you'll find it on ebay too cheaply. The hardware can be bought most places that sell electrical or even audio /TV stuff since it's also used for that now in distribution for pubs and the like.

A good idea maybe to enrol on a basic networking course at a nightschool...it's not rocket science, ut one day you'll want to add a network drive, printer and maybe even link to your TV etc too...and maybe fix it .

I've networked up computers many times for clients and in my home.

Connecting the Network wires is an art (the wall plates are easy, can do them in a few seconds, as it's punch tool and the sockets are colour coded. But the plugs takes me a min or so each. untangle and straighten the wires in the correct order...) But that's the hardest bit of it all!

The rest is basically pushing / pulling wires underfloor or down walls. Once you've worked out where you want your wall points and the best place to hide the router, the rest is easy... ^_^

Wiring cables is easy with structured cabling (i.e. the stuff designed to be buried in walls). Get 6e though and futureproof yourself.

thanks all....considered homeplugs but thought about going hard wired since the floors are coming up anyway..

maybe I should look @ Homeplugs again....will be a pain in the ar&e if I shell out and they dont work because of the odd wiring in my house..
