second hand goods

Hi, my daughter bought a pair of ghd hair straighteners privately second hand, in the advert it just mentioned ghd's £30 so I emailed the woman, confirmed they were genuine and she said that she was only selling as bought a white set. I took my daughter to the womans house, the woman switched them on for a few seconds to show that were heating up ok which my daughter was happy with and we came home after handing over the money. The next day my daughter was using them and after a minute or so they started to stink of superglue and the plate became really loose. I contacted the woman back who said that they had previously been repaired by ghd and take it up with them as its nothing to do with her. As I see it, she did not advise that the straighteners had previously been faulty and glued together so that is her fault for not telling us as we would not have bought them otherwise, she says as a private buyer I have no rights but I think I have as they were not sold fit for purpose as who wants there eyes running with water because of glue fumes getting in them and the possibility of superglue in their hair! Please help and let me know where I stand with this. Thanks

You don't stand in a very good position. You had the opportunity to carry out any tests you wanted to. I'm afraid you bought as seen. It's "Buyer beware" with private sales. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

What were you thinking of,buying stuff like this second hand though,it can be dangerous.Always be very wary of people selling an item particularly when they are replacing the same item with an identical one.
A list of questions you should ask someone should include, did you buy it from new? Has it ever been repaired.Asking somone why they are selling something is usually a waste of time, they will probably lie.0 -
Think Ihave learned my lesson then, thanks guys0
