First ever credit card. Help!

in Credit cards
Dear All
I am planning to get my first credit card. I'm 24 and have always resisted credit cards before as I was worried about over-spending. I am an avid moneysavingexpert fan and it has helped me to sort out my savings accounts. I'm now financially comfortable, with savings and no debt (except the usual student debt). I am convinced I can handle having a card without getting myself in trouble and I can pay it off each month. First question: I have no credit rating as I've never had a card before. Will this limit my options in applying for cards?
I earn £12,500 a year, tax free on a PhD scholarship. For my PhD I need to start travelling abroad on fieldwork (which I am also funded for). Ideally I would like a card that either pays me cashback on these large airfare purchases (which I will subsequently claim back from my university) or that gives me some sort of airmiles incentive. Second question, then: which cards best suit these purposes? I will be flying KLM, Continental Airlines or British Airways to get where I need to go!
In addition to all this, question number three, does anyone have any suggestions about airline loyalty schemes?
I hope someone out there in MoneySavingLand can help me!! Thanks muchly :j
