BT Bogus Engineer

Hi

I recently placed an order with BT and today I am meant to have an engineer out, this afternoon between 1pm - 6pm however at 11am this morning I get a knock on the door......

When answered a guy wearing a buy jacket saying 'openreach' on it and he is holding a note pad with hand written writing on it.
He asks who I am, I confirm and he says he is here to install a new line, comes in, looks around out the back and upstairs; I'm with him the whole time then says he is going to make a phone call.
Think nothing of it, he comes back and says due to health and safety reasons can't complete the install and that he will contact my existing service porovider, !!!!!!???? I don't have one, I don't even have a BT line wire to my house.

I instantly rint BT after he leaves and they contact BT Openreach urgently in my area and they are told NO ENGINEER HAS PICKED THE JOB UP EVEN YET!!!!!
And that they are sending an engineer this afternoon.

I am now worried about who the hell it was, any ideals??

BT have advised, order is still live awaiting engineer this after between my pre arranged appointment time.

He may be a BT contractor out to do a survey or it may be that the job takes more than one man, hence H&S.
However, the onus is on you to ask for ID before admitting anyone on to your property & he should've produced his ID without asking.
  • Was he in a proper BT openreach van?

Did you not ask for ID? With all the scams around these days i wouldnt let anyone past the front door, without confirming who they were.

Did he ask 'are you Mr/Mrs Diabetes' or did he just ask your name? If the latter I would be more suspicious. If he knew your name it seems more likely that he was genuine, though you still should have asked for ID.

NEVER tell anyone your name at the door. If they say your name then confirm by all means if they seem genuine enough. Mind, if they are genuine they will know who you are before you open your mouth. Ask to see their paperwork too if worried.

    Hi Diabetes,

Has the line been connected for you yet? If you need further information on the order or there are any problems just send me a PM and I will be happy to look into it for you.

    Thanks

    Shane.
