EDIT: i have now got my usage. Please see post 10.

I would appreciate if you would now offer your opinion on whom to switch to. I've read a few bad things about certain ebergy suppliers (Scottish and EDF) and would like to move once and stay with that company for at least a year.

See my thread here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2027267

Thanks.

Hi,

I would greatly appreciate some help with working out my energy usage so I can go on a energy comparison site and switch.

I do want a company who come out and do regular meter reading themselves, anyone you'd recommend?

eON have just said they want to raise my DD to £62 :cry: , considering I'm always in credit I really don't want to do that! I would like to switch and be on a more sensible DD:D.

Thank you in advance :beer:

    Why not just ring your energy supplier up and ask them? Just ask last full year, Spring too Spring.

    Just make sure you get your usage in kWhs.

    Hi rossyl,

    Have you asked E.ON why they want to increase your Direct Debit :confused: you should be in credit at this time of year, as this will go towards your larger winter bills and avoid you having a debt after the cold months.

    Energy companies are required to read the meter at least once every two years, this is the same for all suppliers.

    Your usage in kWh is shown on your bills, as it is much more accurate to use your usage on a comparison site and not the monthly spend.

    Some utility companies arrange for someone to come out to attempt to read the meter more often than others. In my part of the world (Norfolk), EON and British gas attempt to read the meter each quarter, Southern every six months. NPOwer and EDF seem to attempt to read the meter whenever they feel like it to be honest!

    The old Eon supercomputer has blown a gasket recently, as I mentioned the other day my own DD payments have been raised then lowered on consecutive months. If you are in credit, ring them up. Although you should have a healthy surplus going into winter, not just a quid in your account.

    Hi rossyl,

    Sounds like the DD has been increased to ensure you have a zero balance at the review date, after winter, but I would definitely check this with E.ON.

    We can't work out your usage in kWh as we don't know what the readings were about a year ago. E.ON will be able to let you know.

    We can't work out your usage in kWh as we don't know what the readings were about a year ago.

    The OP has supplied the readings from about a year ago :confused:. Any approximations and presumptions will be swamped by the far greater variation caused by differences in the weather from one year to the next.

    Electricity:
    1 Nov 08 - 24566
    7 Oct 09 - 26150

    1 Nov 08 to 1 Nov 09 is 365 days. 7 Oct is 24 days before 1 Nov. So you have used (26150-24566) units over (365-24) days. To convert 1584 over 341 days to an annual amount multiply by 365/341.

    So 1584 * 365 / 341 = 1695 kWhs electricity.

    Gas:
    1 Nov 08 - 8828
    26 Sep 09 - 9102

    1 Nov to 1 Sep is 10 months. Plus another 25 days to 26 Sep. So that's one month and 4 days short of 365 days. So let's call that 330 days.

    Over 330 days you used 274 units. Over 365 days that corresponds to 365/330 * 274 or 303 units.

    Of course, this is a slight underestimate as you are missing out October's gas consumption which is usually higher than average. 303 units is about 9697 kWhs.

    So use 1700 and 9750 as good enough approximations for your annual useage.

    Kim, not sure if you missed the readings I also gave? I've given readings from yesterday, so that is pretty much a years worth.

    Gas = 9051 kwh
    Elec = 1700 kwh

    Started a new post on who to move to, as on reading, it seems certain providers aren't too good.

    (Just noticed your readings from yesterday. Using those figures yields 1700 and 9450.)
