Proof Of ID + Proof Of Address

Hi,
I am having a nightmare trying to open a bank account for my wife. As we lack of proof of address as we are living with parents who take care of all the household bills and have there names on it, which cannot be changed in any circumstances. However, we do have a letter from HMRC with my wifes name on it, but they spelt the surname 1 letter incorrect and for this we cannot open a bank account? The HMRC will not send out another letter with amended surname! Anyone had this problem before? Will any banks allow this minute thing so we can get a bank account! They accept her passport but not address saying time and time again we need a utility bill.

I would suggest opening an account with Barclays. They only require a passport or drivers licence, which counts as proof of name and address.0

are you on the voters role at the parents address - they can confirm that & use it as an address confirmation0
-
It was Barclay's who refused an account. No she is not on the voters role as she is not a resident.0
-
Do you mean she is not resident in this country? because that may mean she is not eligible for these accounts.
Or do you mean her main address is different from the current one, in which case she may find it easier to open an account using that address then notify change address later.0 -
To my understanding you don't require to be a resident of the UK to have a bank account. If you are in the UK legally and can prove it by documentation which the bank did accept her temp visa but not her address because of a simple spelling error. She only lives at 1 address.0

Ask HMRC to send the letter again with the correct surname.0 -

Have you thought about asking the bank what to do?
Catch 22 -> can't get some sort of bill without a card -> can't get a card without some sort of bill.
Could you ask parents if she can go on water bill or something? Then change it back after?0 -
What bank do the parents use? It's worth going into their bank with one of them, all relevant ID and trying to open an account. If the bank refuses then kick up a fuss there and then.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0
