oh dear, serious accident to my dad.

I have just got in from the hospital a few hours ago. My dad who is a keen cycilist who is 68 years of age, young at heart and loves life. He was out for his daily 5mile ride when he was turn going over a roundabout and a car went straight into him. He hit the bonnet and then his head hit the windscreen. My dad got thrown up in the air and landed on his shoulder. He has been taken into hispital and has been diagnosed as having several broken ribs, a broken collar bone, broken tip of the thumb, gash to the fore head and a bump on his leg. The nurse has also said he may suffer from a callapsed lung later but they will not know for sure until he has another scan. The driver stopped and got out and asked my dad if he was ok, needless to say my dad was furious. Two people seen what had happened, a lady and an off duty policeman. According to my dad and the witnesses they stated the driver speeded up to try and pass my dad before he got over the roundabout. My dad said as he looked to the left the driver looked at him, and when he went into the window he seen the drivers face. My dad nevers wears a helmet but really should, he has never been in any accidents and the nurses have said he is extremley lucky to be alive and naturally gave him a ticking off for not wearing one. He has to have an operation tomorow for his shoulder bone, and he is very scared. I have never seen my dad like this, i just hope he pulls round asap.

Sorry to hear about your dad.

It beggars belief how drivers can be so blind to certain hazards.
  • my mother spoke to the police and apparently there is conflicting evidence as the driver stated in his statement that he never seen my dad, yet the witnesses stated he speeded up to get in front of my dad before he got across the roundabout.
  • as long as his head is ok, all the other things are just broken bones, hopefully he will be fine

the statement from the driver is a bit damning actually.

He didnt see him !!!! Well your dad was obviously there so the driver is at fault for not seeing him. So he obviously couldnt have been looking properly - the daft bat. A lawyer should pull him to bit over just that bit.

Hope your dad will be okay and by him a helmet for Christmas.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I hope your dad gets better soon.

Some people are just so dopey, i am full of road rage at the moment but it astounds me how many people don't pay attention. Then again, someone on another thread posted this link the other day which shocked me too

Mind you, i was driving tonight and some chav just decided he'd cross the road diagonally on his bike (one handed & smoking!) as slow as he liked, and i must say i didn't notice him at first cos he was wearing all black and it was dark, the road wasn't particularly well lit but i couldn't help but think he'd be a goner if i wasn't paying attention. I was only doing 30 but had to slow down a fair bit for the goon.

So it sent me off on a little rant to my young son about how people should wear helmets and have lights on their bikes :D

Being hit by a car a helmet would be unlikely to make much difference. They're really only designed for minor bumps. There's no evidence that they actually make any signifcant difference.

Anyway, I hope your dad recovers and the idiot behind the wheel get sthe book thrown at them.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Sorry to hear about your dad, hope he makes a full recovery soon and is back on his bike (with helmet) again soon :D

Helmets will help with head injuries of course, but won't stop injuries caused by landing right on your shoulder!

Sounds like you have a good case for compensation there!
