Help with car costs please
I've just had my car in the garage to get checked before it's MOT. They came up with £550 worth of work on top of a £150 service. The quoted prices seem quite high but I don't know if I'm being ripped off or not....advice please
Prices quited are
Fuel treatment £20
Headlight alignment £20
Clean brake pipes £25
Front brake pads £55
Rear brake pads and disks £235
3 x tyres £195
Its a renault megane 1.6 petrol 2003
Thanks

Just asked OH who is a mechanic and MOT tester:
Fuel treatment £20 - about average
Headlight alignment £20 - probably a little higher than average of £10 dependant on where you live
Clean brake pipes £25 - a little expensive
Front brake pads £55 - about average
Rear brake pads and disks £235 - correct - discs and wheel bearings are one unit and are therefore expensive
3 x tyres £195 - about average for a "budget" tyre to fit your vehicle's spec.;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)0 -
It mounts up quickly doesn't it.0

Take it to a council run MOT centre for its MOT and see what it fails on.
Since when has fuel treatment been part of the MOT lol0 -
The fuel treatment may have been done due to emission problems which would prevent the vehicle from passing the MOT;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)0

yeah man do this, they dont do work, so wont have a commercial interest in failing it!
they hardly ever do public mot's, but to be able to have an mot licence they have to do public ones if a member of the public asksNo reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
As for the tyres - put some good quality pressure tested part worns on for 30 quid a corner.0

I wouldn't - they could be from a crashed car, and are the only thing holding you to the road. Instead look at mytyres and Blackcircles and get something reasonable for less than the £65 quoted by the dealer0 -
Hi Friends,
I find the cost to be fine enough. If others are commenting on the low cost then quality might matter. If you have done your servicing in a reputed service center then definitely quality won't be the issue.
