We have already opened a Coop account, we don`t go BR until late Nov.. Just did not want to leave it too late and find ourselves in a pickle.

Please note that online banking is not available to people in your 'situation'. If you want online banking, you should have went for the Co-op Cashminder.
Personally I could never go & sit & be humiliated in a Barclays branch. There is no privacy & they do not allow opening the Cashcard account over the phone.

I did the Coop Cashminder completely over the phone, got internet banking & felt completely at ease discussing my impending BR with the operator....in fact we had a good chat & was really nice to speak to someone inside the UK rather than an `offshore` callcentre. I opened a second account recently for just household bills...again few minutes on the phone & the card, pin etc arrived few days later. Plus all my direct debits were switched over immediately.

Having spent the majority of my working life on the `inside` of a banking industry which has become ever more complex & sales driven.... I really appreciated the no frills simplicity of the Co-op banking facilities.

    .

Barclays Cash Card Accounts are opened in branch (they used to be opened by post). You should have done this, and you get the account details on the day. Only one piece of photo ID is needed, which counts as proof of name and address. Too late now, as you openend an account with the Co-op.

Please note that the Cash Card Account doesn't come with online banking when you are bankrupt.

Sorry book12.....I`m not convinced...LOL Co-op offer online banking & that is more important to me anyway.
  • Go with the Co-op. They are really BR friendly, I went into the branch and the chap I spoke to was really nice, was very helpful. This was the day after my BR and he was giving me some really good advice on what I could do the help rebuild my credit file.

It was him who directed me to this website, he also opened a savings account for me. I did of course get 'referred' but a quick 2 minute chat over the phone to another really nice chap and it was all sorted out within a week.

A lot of people on here mention how nice the co-op are to them even though they are BR, and i think we should all reward the co-op for this with our business....

I even had a 'unpaid item' fee charged to my account, I called the co-op explained that it was an internet shopping company trying to take the money when they shouldn't have and she cancelled the fee for me. Although honestly I'm not sure if that was the co-op been nice to me or because of all the recent stuff going on with bank charges!!!!
