open as soon as.....unless you live in brighton (the OR's there close basic accounts for some strange reason!)We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0

Opened my cashminder week before going br and or has no interest in it as it only for wages. Told coop when applied I was going br and they were fine.0

You can open one now if you like. I got myself a Barclays Cashminder account, basically because there's a Barclays in my town. I also got a proper Visa card, but it still checks to see the money's there before completing a transaction. It was a bit of a pain getting the account open though, as they initially rejected it because I was bankrupt! Luckily, I spoke to someone with common sense and it was swiftly reversed.0

Depending on who you go with yep....barclays will be easier in branch co-op you can do 24/7 over the phoneWe all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0

as long as you only have enough cash in the account to cover your living expenses then no.....the OR's never tend to be interested in "basic" accounts

I have been declared BR fo a week now and i opened a basic bank account with the coop bank, its really great account, and OR is not interested in it at all. co op are an ethical bank and are much more sympathetic. Good luck!0

Personally I could never go & sit & be humiliated in a Barclays branch. There is no privacy & they do not allow opening the Cashcard account over the phone.
I did the Coop Cashminder completely over the phone, got internet banking & felt completely at ease discussing my impending BR with the operator....in fact we had a good chat & was really nice to speak to someone inside the UK rather than an `offshore` callcentre. I opened a second account recently for just household bills...again few minutes on the phone & the card, pin etc arrived few days later. Plus all my direct debits were switched over immediately.
Having spent the majority of my working life on the `inside` of a banking industry which has become ever more complex & sales driven.... I really appreciated the no frills simplicity of the Co-op banking facilities.
