Badly rusted radiator

It is hard to convince my Landlord to change my Bathroom radiator (normal suggestion they'll replace if leaking!)

It has a large amount of rust coming through the radiator paint work and rust is also showing where the paint has come off. Not in the best place as it is beside the lavatory!!! I am scarred to touch it (wire brush or wool) in case I make it worse!!!

What is the worse that can happen, will it flood my home or just leak from the single radiator. (if the pump is working I assume it could spit out water!!)

  • Hi...it will just start to dripp slightly at some point..put a dish under it when it does.

Give a wire wool if you wanna make it leak faster:j

We have had one with a pinhole leak which sprayed a fine jet of water some distance away from the actual radiator. If it "goes" overnight, you could lose a substantial amount of water!

if it does go suddenly, put a self tapping screw into the hole.
    a good old temporary remedy.

I managed to get my old badly rusted radiator taken away and a replacement ordered (Week 1)

Guy came with a new radiator BUT it's smaller in width than the previous one
so he couldn't fit it (Week 2) (pipes don't marry up!)

Question?? Why (he muttered Imperial V Metric) is this such a difficult job???
I will have to wait in for the third time whenever the Heating Engineer has got whatever he has had to order!!!

Just as well if my experience is anything to go by. One of the large radiators in my lounge/diner 'went' (ie sprung a leak through a formerly unseen rusting spot) one night. I came downstairs to find half an inch of water in the dining area and a ruined laminate floor... (sadly only two years old too!) Fortunately, my house insurance covered it. Everything was all fixed or replaced and my dining table and chairs had to be stripped and repolished by a specialist.

A small leak can cause a huge amount of damage so watch out for rusting radiators!
