Insuring a cheap car

Hi - I'm getting very frustrated as my car is worth about £350 and yet I seem to have to pay a lot of insurance, even 3rd party, to cover it, and high excesses - doesn't really add up - I've 6 years no claims too - any clues as to how I can bring insurance down - I've done moneysupermarket.com and gocompare.com - just doesn't seem to be any lower figures out there for cars not worth a lot....

You are not only insuring your car.
You are insuring 3rd parties against your actions.
If you maim or kill someone it could cost millions in lost income (depending on who you knock over).
There was a famous case a while ago costing £30M when Gary Hart drove onto a railway track and derailed a train.
Have you tried comprehensive? as well as third part fire & theft?
Sometimes cmprehensive can be cheaper.
Bizarre, but I've found it myself.
If you have followed everything in Martins article then I'm afraid that's just the price for driving on share roads where you have to insure against 3rd party claims.
Are you interested in improving your driving skills?
You could do a reasonably cheap course with charities like IAM or ROSPA.
If you motivation is purely financial then I would suggest you do vittual quotes first i.e. see how much money you get of if you claim you have passed your advanced test.0 -
What do you consider to be a cheap price for the insurance? And what area do you live in?0

I've had quotes of about £150 for 3rd party, £170 for comprehensive - live in Oxford, car on drive - partner insuring a focus worth £4k is paying less than me - I'm bamboozled on this.

It's not about the value of the car (as has been explained to you)
You know how insurers ask you a lot of questions (age, occupation, where you live etc)? Well they all have a bearing on how much you pay. Maybe your partner's answers are 'better' than yours. Maybe your car is more likely to have a major failure and cause an accident than your partner's is. And so on..................I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair0 -
I wouldn't say this was a high figure for insurance given that your covered for millions in 3rd party claims.
The difference could be down to claims, convictions, years licence held, employment type, mileage, cover level (business? commuting?), legal cover option?, courtesy car option? etc.
If your really curious then you need to compare every factor with that of your partner.
Have you tried all the tips e.g. tried adding your partner?
Have you looked for cashback to bring the price down.
But basically it's quite a cheap quote.
Young people pay 4 figures these days and it rarely gets below about £90 because of the base level 3rd party cost, so I'd say that was a low premium.0
