Public Liability Insurance

Hi,

In addition to my full time employment, I am a part time wedding photographer at the weekends and need to get some public liability insurance.

Does anyone know where I can get very cheap insurance. All the quotes I have seen assume that you are full time self employed and the premiums are commensurate with that. It would be nice if an insurance company offered insurance to part time business people with cheaper premiums.

Any help would be appreciated.

See if a local broker can get you better deals.

I have no connection with the following firm but they appear to have a specialist scheme for photographers.

When brokers have schemes like this, there is a far higher chance they will have come across your type of part time business before and have something that will suit.
You would probably be better off with professional indemnity cover though.

Public liability covers you for injury or damage that you cause through your activities. Apart from treading on the bride's train there is little you can do to wreck the wedding day.

Proffesional indemnity covers you for !!!! ups you cause as a result of your profession. Things like deleting files or ruining film that result in a claim against you for the cost of restaging all the photos.

I agree with Matty, you should really be looking to get a package that covers Professional Indemnity, Public Liability, Negatives etc etc.

There was an pro-am wedding photographer who was sued recently and if he had cover the Insurance would have covered the costs

    Thanks Guys,

I don't need the professional indemnity as my clients sign my Ts & Cs which state that my max liability is my fee. i.e. will not pay for re-staging wedding in the event of trashing the digital images.

Have you had the T+C checked over by a solicitor? Weddings are emotive issues with families and in the event the images are ruined somehow, I would not expect to walk away from the problem saying "you signed the t+c".

Also, if you are doing work for family and friends, the relationship will sour.

    Thanks Mattymoo...

The clause in the contract that is signed by myself and the client relating to liability is as follows...

    Limitation of Liability
In the unlikely event of a total photographic failure or cancellation of this contract by either party or in any other circumstance the liability of one party to the other shall be limited to the total value of the contract. Neither party shall be liable for indirect or consequential loss.

I have never had it checked out by a solicitor because of the cost but I think it's explicitly clear.

    Any more advice is appreciated.

I got my public liability insurance from More Than Business and pay around £13 a month and my professional indemnity insurance from Hiscox for £11 a month (both interest free).

As you are also a wedding photographer I think that you should have professional indemnity insurance - I don't think that a client signing your terms & conditions is enough protection for you should something go wrong.
  • Give in focus insurance dot co dot uk a call - they were by far the cheapest for me and all the quotes are bespoke which is good if you're just part time

Considering how much wedding photographers charge, I'm surprised that cost of insurance is an issue.

I was looking for this about a month ago (was considering it as a business venture as I know my way around a camera) and found you can get public liability insurance for photographers from Ashburnham Insurance for £52 a year.

I don't personally know anything about this company but my friend recommended them to me at the time as he has his liability insurance with them (albeit not for photography) and said that ashburnham are very good.

They don't seem to do professional indemnity but certainly seem the best price for the public liability side of things.
