You could always ask your Part P registered electrician! Lots of variables here, mostly "de-rating" factors such as length of cable?, running though insulation? Installation method?

That load will draw around 21A.
  • Hi, You will need 6mm squared twin and earth. Peter
  • thank you Zax47 and Peter,

The old oven was running on 4mm and the guy who came to install new oven said it needed 6mm, wanted to confirm just in case he was pulling a fast one.

    Thanks for your replies again.

almost all the old cookers had 4mm cable rated at 32 amps.
the new regs say 6mm is required, rated at 40 amps.

    same applies to showers now.
    Get some gorm.

I concur with that one, finished my elec apprenticeship in 89 and we were using 6mm for cooker circuits then, shower circuits are a different kettle of fish ormus most showers nowadays are 10mm some are 16mm !

As zax said, it will depend on other factors - according to the regs, 21A can be safely drawn by 4 mm twin and earth cable even if enclosed in an insulated wall. If it's run in trunking or just under floors or in a normal plaster wall, then it's good for up to 36A.

Unless you have loads of insulation or other more unusal factors, 4mm on a 32 circuit breaker would be OK.

I think you need to check again with your sparks and ask him to explain why he wants to upgrade to 6mm.

Each sceanrio is different and electricians should calculate the cable size for that particular instance.
