Tidying up family photos etc

  • I finished mine two nights ago and must admit to me and my dh spending hundreds of hours of work. He did all the scanning and photo repairing (lucky for me as he is an expert) and I did the sorting and re-sorting and wrote all the captions and a few pages on family history. At the back I did the actual geniology and am very grateful that someone else had done the hard work with one unbroken line, back to 1375. Anyway I collated everything and made the family book, which is now online for the family to preview and buy

The family photos for our own family have been sorted, scanned and copied onto disc, so that each child will have one containing all the folders and we will have one as well. Now I have the end enjoyment of making scrapbooks out of the boxes of photos which have been scanned. That is the best bit. I have the backing papers, albums etc all acid free and am looking forward to spending many happy hours crafting

It has been a very daunting and slow process but the minute I finished, I felt a huge weight lift off me

What a good idea. We spent ages puzzling over photos when we cleared my parents' house.

A disc for each child is a great plan. Now, who will end up doing it?

I did our last year, and put them on to disc, however, mum had loads of colour transparencies and so did we, I bought a reasonably priced Hewlett Packard scanner which does transparencies and they came out very well, it took hours, but is now all on disc, although no titles, will have to put a note with the disc, but there are dates from - to. Fortunately transparencies had the dates on them.

I have photoshop, but use the free Picasa, which is an absolutely super little programme.

It certainly brings back memories and is a very pleasureable thing to do, except a few tears now and then!! In our seventies so it is all very nostalgic.
    Best wishes, oap

ps the touch up photo is very very good, well done.
  • I have jsut had the same tidy up idea andhad just tried to transfer all my mothers slides (600 in all) onto the PC but the slide scanner I brought from Maplins for £40 said it was compatable with vista but after several frustrating hours it turns out it is not (full refund given by Maplins) However I still want to do the exercise has any one else had experiance of a scanner and Vista if so what make did you use and where from.

I have never used slides but the best site for photographs, for me at least, is FLICKR. They were really good when I emailed them about how to do something with one of my pics. Many sites don't resond to emails. If they cannot help with your slides they can probably tell you the best site to go to.
