  • Update: This LCD monitor, like many others, appears to display 24-bit colour depth only, which runs into the millions of colours, not billions as claimed by Samsung with their top end LCD TVs. This would explain the colour banding effect. So if you want to get the clearest picture with as much colour as possible, then you need to hand over a bit more cash. However, the current HDMI standard (1.0) only supports 24-bit colour depth?!? You might want to wait until manufacturers start shipping LCD TVs with HDMI 1.3.

I bought one of these last week from Asda in Burgh Heath. They are now down to £349. There's some good and some bad points to be had with this model. There are 2 scart inputs, one which I use for my cable box, and the other to which I have connected my xbox. If you get these the wrong way round, the picture will appear dark. Once figured out, I have no issues with brightness. That said, the picture quality from scart is not as good as on my Philips 28" CRT TV.

I use the 27SL predominately with my PC via the VGA input. DVD playback is actually surpisingly good (far better than if you were to connect a standalone player via scart). I have not noticed any motion blur. From what I have read, 720p is a better format for motion playback, thus why most of the US sports channels transmitting in HD prefer 720p.

The picture on VGA is bright enough to hurt my eyes when I look at anything with a white background. The white is very good (no noticeable hues) , black is not perfect but is good enough for my liking.

The picture does appear to suffer some amount of gradient banding and posterization and a very small amount of artifacting on video playback. This seems to affect WMVHD playback more than DVD playback. I have not yet tried the HDMI input as I do not have any hardware which outputs in this format.
This may or may not improve the posterization effect. It all depends on how many colours the LCD and on-board firmware have been set up to handle. I cannot find any specifications for this model on the internet, nor in the product literature (which is brief to say the least).

There are plenty of forum discussions on the internet regarding gradient banding. There are people with very expensive 720p and 1080i plasma screens who suffer the same issue.
Some people have noticed improvements using HDMI while others haven't. Some also claim that ATI cards produce better results than nVidia with regard to banding.

If I go HDMI, I shall update this post, otherwise, all said and done, I'm quite pleased with this TV, particularly as it only cost £349. As others have said, you get what you pay for.

Please feel free to contact me if you want any further info.

The colur banding has nothing to do with the amount of colours, but of the c***p processing on cheap displays. You only need to worry about HDMI 1.3 if your planning to make use of Dolby True HD audio.

This is due to LCD technology, and shows much worse on cheaper displays. If you want black blacks get a good plasma.

You get what you pay for certainly applies as overheads are high in display technology. Don't get a display just beacause its cheap and is a "flat screen". Do some research, and your eyes will thank you.
  • Bought a ONN tV model OLCD2601 in Asda on a special offer, it was an exhibit model but there was no box for it, no remote control and no instructions. But I thought no problem. Now I can't get it tuned in, any idea anybody?
