All Asda stores are currently undergoing a refresh with regard to Televisions and alot of new lines are being introduced. The refresh will look very similar to Currys etc with a bank of tvs and you having to ask for stock. I think this is a main line and not a promotional line from what I can gather.

makesure it has a higher res than 720 as if it is lower than that say 640x480 or that for pic res then its not HD ready = hd ready has to have MORE than 720. ie 1024x768 or that...... and look for HDMI / DVI connections. HDMI being the best - if sky use copy protection on the HD channels, which they might, then if you have DVI then you wont beable to watch HD channels, will only work with HDMI so i would rec HDMI socket if you want a true HD tv :)

Some televisions have the HDCP through the DVI input so if it only has DVI check the television has HDCP and if it has it should be fine,of course HDMI/HDCP would be better but if the price reflects the sacrafice then I'd personally go for it.

I bought one of these and have had a week to get used to it. I saw it in two branches of Asda: Oadby and Thurmaston (Leicester). In both stores it wasn't with the normal TV displays but at the end of an aisle with the boxes on display. The advantage of the having the boxes on show is that you can read the full spec on the side. It isn't obvious from the box, but Baier seems to be like Pacific, Durabrand, Dual, and Onn: an Asda/Wal-Mart own brand or one they've bought the rights to; the label on the back of the set and the instruction booklet both say 'Made for Asda Stores'. It looks similar (but not identical) to the cheaper HD-ready sets being sold for a bit more in branches of PC World and Dixons.

Since the branches of Asda I've visited revamped their TV selection it's been very hard to judge the picture quality of those on display because they've all been showing a DVD of an old football match played back on one of their own £18 DVD players. In all cases, it's obvious that the poor picture quality is determined by the source material, not by the hardware.

Although obviously made to a price, it seems reasonable considering that it's only £30 more than the non-HD 26" Beko model also on display. The picture quality is pretty decent, connected to my BT (actually Netgem) Freeview box and 4Kus (actually Liteon) DVD recorder, which are daisy-chained into one of the RGB SCART sockets. I don't have anything that uses HDMI so I can't comment on how good the picture is when the set is used to its full potential. I also haven't yet connected my PC to the VGA input although I intend to. The best picture quality I've seen on it so far was last week's Doctor Who, recorded with my PC's digital tuner and transferred to a DVD-RW using Nerovision Express.

I also can't comment on the analogue tuner: I get dreadful TV reception and don't really understand why Freeview works at all from the same aerial.

Only one real annoyance so far, and not one that really warrants taking it back: when it switches between 16:9 and 4:3 the picture disappears for a fraction of a second. I don't know whether the set, the Freeview box, or a combination of the two causes this.

I don't think the built-in stand can be removed to enable the set to be attached to a bracket. Not an issue for me but it may be for some.

Only time will tell if I am right or they are wrong
  • Baier LCD 27" has a very good display and price to match. Only got mine yesterday, and mounted it to the wall with the asda wallmount bracket costing around £30............... Very sharp display when used with a PC and XBOX..

I've seen these TVs at my local Asda - has anyone else got one?
If so, what's it like? Anyone tried it with an Xbox 360?
Not sure whether to get one - it's very tempting, they are £399 now!

that is why it is so cheap.

In this case the phrase, you get what you pay for, certainly applies
