PC keeps stopping

My PC is about 5 years old and it keeps crashing / stopping on me. I have Mcaffee Gaurdian which keeps telling me that the "spooler sub-system" has crashed and then it does nothing so I have to switch off and then wait for it to check the hard drive for errors. Also while on the 'net it keeps stopping half way through an action (ie finding a web page). Is there something permanently wrong or can it be fixed. If new base unit required (moniter etc OK) can anybody recommend any. Saw thread for Dell on other board but couldn't really understand all the ordering process.
thanks

With all miscellaneous PC problems I recommend using both AdAware & Spybot to clear out any scumware from your machine, then clear out all the cookies & temporary files .
Doing this gets rid of 95% of all known software problems.0 -
Are you using a USB hub?
Disconnect that if you are and see how you go.
Try morgan computers for a new base unit or dell.0 -
I would say its more likely an operating system (Windows) problem. If this has not been upgraded or reinstalled in the last 5 years you have done well!
I guess you will be running windows 98 perhaps.
If the system still meets your requirements then if all else fails wiping the hard disk and reinstalling windows and all the drivers and software will probably solve all your problems!
Though to be honest I would probably consider purchasing a complete new system not just a base unit as things have moved on leaps and bounds in 5 years.
Dell certainly have some good offers and are trustworthy and reliable.
Personally I tend to format the hard drive and reinstall everything about once a year anyway as the system slows down after time with bits of rubbish left behind from installing and uninstalling software etc.
I certainly shouldn't be a terminal problem though!0 -
Windows ME
Can you tell me how to do wipe the Hard Disk. I have saved all programs etc on cd-rw over the past few weeks.**BERTIE**Did you Know: It costs more than £325,000 a day to run the lifeboat service? (with no government funding) Please donate to the RNLI0 -
