Pot herbs
Hi all, i have bought several potted herbs from Aldi and Asda to add to my cooking. I keep them on my kitchen window sill. The problem is, after 3 or 4 dayts they wilt then die. I am watering them every day so i don't know what else to do. Is it because there isn't any direct sunlight in my kitchen? Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm wasting a fortune on fresh herbs.

Well, they are probably drowning if you are watering them every day! The problem with the pots of herbs is that they aren't really designed to last. They're just in a pot to give them a longer 'shelf' life. There is a lot planted in a very small space and no nutrients.
I have successfully managed to keep some herbs, but I split them and plant round the edge of a bigger pot and feed them. Water them, but don't keep them sodden. If you don't have much light I don't know how they'll do."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I'd agree that they can last longer if you can split them up and repot them. I have some parsley and some chives outside in a windowbox that I planted out 6 months ago from some supermarket plants, they are doing great, the corriander died after a few months so it is a bit hit and miss. Basil has also done well inside when split up and repotted, although I find it still dies after a few months.0

lar316,
It obviously doesnt work for tender herbs like basil, or annuals, but the following herbs are fine for the garden and fully hardy: thyme, rosemary, bay, mint, sage, chives, oregano. Once planted they are there year on year. There are others but I've picked the most common.0 -
hi im the same but i do find that asdas do die quicker they last so much longer from tescos , im also trying 2 grow my own too save some money !0

Aldi and Lidl (And other places) sell seeds and sometimes little trays with lids for seeds to germinate in...about pound, pounstretcher and other cheap shops sell rectangular plastic tubs perfect for window ledges in the kitchen for about 1 pound.
The hardy herbs can be eventually grown on external windowledges or patios etc...the others look very nice and grow well inside on a window ledge similar to what you are doing now but they don't die.
The only herb I ever had a problem with was Dill which I grew indoors on the living room window sill and was very happy with...until I relaised how tall it grew, and it jammed up my roller blind
Some herbs need to be constantly replaced as you use them, coriander is one of those for me...never seems to last very long. I buy seeds from the indian shops and use them in food or plant them so it's no big deal as it's cheap enough.
Chillies are nice in a kitchen too...if you haven't tried them yet. I saw someone buy a single chillie yesterday at my local shop ...for 25p ! My kitchen is a goldmine if they cost that much :rotfl:
It's so easy to grow herbs and you get something really nice for the effort apart from the saved money.
