Hey there are no set rules set to treating customers fairly and phoning a dealer is certainly not a requirement anyway, also you are all assuming this car is mint?? as described, Lv engineers will have either seen images of the car and based the value on age. Condition mileage etc from the relevant guides, or seen it in person and valued accordingly and within the TCf and ombudsman rules, they do it far more than 6 times a day, and we are currently winning more ombudsman referrals than we lose.
But I would say that I am a Lv engineer ;)
    cheers

Your forgetting that every single person in the UK see's their own car as being in Mint condition...:p

Spent yesterday trawling round dealers-consensus was that good quality old BMWs were 'rarer than hens teeth' . Couldn't find anything remotely acceptable. Felt very down.

Tonight I had an offer of £1353 minus excess, and a scrappage purchase price of £52

The price of the car has gone up by a hundred since I bought it .It's one of the last E34s-the hand built ones- and I have spent money on restoring it so scrapping it would be a loss

    Thanks for the help

So your getting £1301 and the car.

You have quotes to fix it of £1k. Surely this is a no brainer then?

That;s what I thought-but it's MOT is due in three days-hence the rush

It should be MOT'able if its just cosmetic damage.

Car passed its MOT (had to have a new catalytic convertor which is another story, less than honest garage claimed to have replaced it and self evidently didn't) Now I have a car which is taxed/tested/legal but still has dented doors. It's now a Category c write off although the gap nopw between valuation and the most recent repair estimate is now £503.

Contacted the DVLA who say the insurers can life the Category C saving the damage being on the logbook and a trip for a Vehicle Identification check. Repairing it will take 5 days and I won't get a hire car.LV now say that the car shouldn't have been a write off with the updated figures and they will get it repaired (on my estimates-a BMW garage that will do it with second hand doors).I thought the advantage of this would be a clear log book/a warranty on repairs and a hire car.On the other hand I could have it done myself for the £850 estimate but there would be no warranty, I'd have to do without the car, get a vehcile check and there would be a Cat C loss on the log book. The car is a BMW 520 SEi E34

Should add that after I nagged LV to contact the other party's insurers she admitted total liability-it would have been pretty hard not to.

Thanks a bunch for all the advice-might look into the specialist insurers next insurance year.
