Does my 16 year old have to pay while she's still at school?

My daughter has had a dental brace for around a year, but lost it out of her bag on the way home from her last appointment.
I rang to ask for an appointment for another one and was told she would have to pay £56, surely that can't be right
Does anyone know who I ask?

My daughter is 11 and has just had her fixed brace removed and been given a retainer. We were told that if she lost the retainer we would have to pay for any replacement.
  • I don't mean to sound harsh on this, but it why should tax payers pay again if she lost the first one we paid for?

I would pay it for her if she can't afford it and deduct it from her pocket money / wages.

My daughter lost her brace in school when she was 10 (she took it out for pe as she was advised to do and it got lost) we had to pay £54 for a new one, but were able to write to the powers that be (your dd's orthodontist should give you a form when you pay) and explain what happened. We got a refund and from what I've been told most people do if they take the time to fill the form in.

If you lose your glasses you can claim on your house contents insurance, could you do the same with a brace?

I am sure you could but given that it is only £56 for a new brace and the average excess for home insurance is £50 I doubt a claim for £6 is going to be worth it when you consider the increase in premiums/ lost of no claims etc

Exactly the same story with my son, who lost his brace while playing football. Orthodontist had told him to remove it for 'contact sports'. I had to pay for replacement - cannot remember exactly how much. Filled in a form the receptionist gave me, and very pleased when refund came a few weeks later.
I did 'read the riot act' to my son about looking after his brace, and about how I had had to pay for a replacement - never did tell him about the refund, but he never lost it again. Doesn't do them any harm to realise things cost money, and not to take 'free' treatment and equipment for granted;)
