Port 25

Just got a new P/C with Windows Xp.
My old one was Windows ME.
My problem is that although I can bring in email, i cannot send it. The error message tells me that I need to send through Port 25. Checked all the settings I know, uninstalled Zone alarm, still nothing going out.
ISP not helping too much.
How do I open port 25 or find what might be blocking my SMTP connection.
Help!!

first off lets see if you can ping the mail server..

    do as follows

start, run typr cmd and hit enter

in the black box that come up type this, replacing the *** with the mail server address, eg pop.yourisp.com

    ping ****.*******.******

now hit enter and does it give a read out or does time out or say host unreachable..

if it gives a read out then ya mail host is reachable from your pc and something is blocking the mail client..

have you made sure windows firewall is turned off.. this can be done in control panel.. no need for it if you are running zomealarm...

You have not said which e-mail client you are using but if it is Outlook Express, go to Tools, Accounts, Mail and select your e-mail account. If you then click on Properties, Advanced you will see where the SMTP port is specified i.e. normally 25.

If your ISP is AOL, I believe that they block port 25 SMTP access.

You should reinstall Zone Alarm ASAP as this will not block your e-mail client.

    ;)

Tried your suggestions but by accident I found the problem. Yes I removed Zone Alarm but I found that my new version of Mcafee had put a block on the Port.
Did not know that this existed in the Antivirus software as it was not in my old version.
All is now working okay so I will reinstall ZoneAlarm tonight.
Again thanks for you help and suggestions, it is good to be able to bounce this type of thing off other users.
