rah! im really angry!
i live alone, i have a tenency in my name and i pay all my bills etc. i have done so for 2 and a half years, i dont get any money or contribution to my household from my parents (just like i shouldnt!) but we do speak, but apparently cause i dont fall into any of teh following categories:
*no contact with parents
*parents dead
*parents abroad or cant be contacted (they live a couple of miles away from me!)
*aged over 25
*married
*supported self for 3 years or over (im short by a few months!)
im classed as 'DEPENDENT' and my loan will be based on my parents income! for petes sake! the woman in the lea office said 'yeah its your age' im 22! how patronising!
now im gonna end up with less loan cause theyre gonna assume that i live with my parents at the holidays and that they help to support me during term-time! im so MAD!!!
has anyone else come across this? does anyone know about loans and know why they do this to obviously INDEPENDENT people?!

Its the law. Unless you have been self-supporting for 3 years before you start the course or you are estranged from your parents, you are treated as dependent. Unless you have a child.
Unfortunately, your parents are expected to make a contribution if their income is high enough. If they don't pay it, no-one else will and no-one will make them pay it. If you apply for any other funding eg Access to learning fund, they will have to assume that your parents pay their contribution. There isn't any way round it I am afraid."Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."0 -
You could ask your parents to legally disown you......that should do it I think!
No seriously........someone else did that and had their SL assessed as an independant. Go to your CAB and find out.
Good Luck.:)0 -
I agree, it's really stupid. I'm in a similar situation, I'm 22 and have my on home complete with mortgage. Despite the fact that I'll have no financial help from my parents I still have to be assessed on their income - it's ridiculous!0

i find it so insulting and patronising, its like theyre saying im too young to live on my own!
unfortunately, i already put my mums name and address in my form as a conatct so i cant really say we have no contact can i? we didnt at first, but we eventualy made friends, and now im half sad we did (joking!)
luckily, its assessed on last tax years income and my mums just graduating so was a full-time student last year and my dads a social entropreneur so doesnt earn very much and also they have a REAL dependednt, my 15-year-old sister
i cant believe i missed it by just a few months, its s really stupid system to put teh age of dependency up to 25, who is still dependent on their parents at that age under normal circumstances? id rather shoot meself persoanlly.:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0 -

three years before teh start of my course i was 15 so to be self-supporting would have been daft wouldnt it? it really makes no sense at all.:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0
