Scottish Power and extremely high bills.

Welcome to the forum.
Presumably you are in an all electric house with 'normal' heaters?(e.g. panel heaters etc)
How many kWh have you used? and where do you live in UK?0 -
Quite a few questions to ask first.
Is your property double glazed/do you have insulation on your hot water tank, how old is your property? What type of heating do you have and how often do you use it? Is the property occupied all day or just after work? Do you leave alot of appliances on standby? Do you use appliances which use alot of power like a tumble dryer? Do you pay your bill by direct debit/online or when the bill arrives?
I am also with Scottish Power on their capped rate, I got my bill yesterday and am hardly in credit which is annoying. I am in a ten year old new build semi detached property with the washing machine on at least once or twice a day, tv on, PC on, and (3 kids who do not know how to turn lights/appliances off !) Hardly ever use my tumble dryer as I know it costs alot. I haven't yet put my heating on. I was paying £80+ a month direct debit but it has gone up to £91 now. This is for my combined gas and electric. I was told I could change tarriffs on Scottish Power and not incur the get out penalty of £50 to get out of the fixed price cap and change to Economy 7? Haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Looks like I am paying alot less than you, so i would check what suage you could maybe cut back on?
Your bill depends on a number of factors. I am quite mean with putting my heating on, etc even though I have a family. I have no idea what my neighbours power bills are like, maybe something you could ask your neighbours if you are friendly with them.
Have you double checked your meter readings on the bill to check they tally , they could be way out if its an estimate and they haven't been read properly for a while. Most power companies have a number you can call to give the right reading and adjust your bill/payment.0 -
I think my usage is similar to yours. Washing machine doing about 2.5 loads per day averaged over the week, one of them per day usually being on a drying cycle.
Use a lot of hot water for baths and showers and have the heating on 20C, and I'm using about £950/year all in.
The best advice for the OP is to read the meter regularly, at least once a week but maybe once a day to start with, to keep a track of exactly what you are using.0 -
Is £1500 based on actual meter readings?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I've had enough of Scottish Power...Enough of getting completely random bills. They don't state what you've used which annoys me. I'm changes houses soon and will be getting a different provider.0
