What consumer rights do I have with garage repairs

Hi,

I was wondering if someone can help me.

Over the past 6 days I have taken my Nissan Micra car into the same garage and everytime I have collected it the same problem has re-occurred.

The problem with the car is the malfunction indicator light came on. I took it to the garage and they ran a diagnostic check on it but could not find anything seriously wrong with the engine however they re-set the codes and said if it happens again to take it back in (paid nearly £40 on this occasion). After 2 days from collecting the car the light came back on again. Took it back to the same garage where they then changed a Lambra sensor. This cost me £110 and after 3 days of having my car the light has come on again.

I have now taken it back to the garage and I would like to know if I should be paying for this 'third time lucky' type repair as I have so far paid out nearly £150 for the same problem to re-occur.

Any advice you can give would be much appreciated.

Yes you should. Its an intermittent fault that is hard to diagnose. The garage have fixed the most likely cause.

You wont find a garage who will guarentee the cause of an intermittent fault normally as its a sort of try and see repair
  • Thank you for your response.

Because this is a try and see repair is there not a cut off point as to how many times I should be taking my car into the garage for them to guess at what it could be next.

What is there to stop a garage from keep guessing and keep charging me.

    Hope the above makes sense

It can seem painful right now, but believe me they are using their experience to fix the cheapest/most likely thing first. They will make very little out of the work they have done so far. of course they could goto the other extreme and change the entire engine!

was it a nissan dealership or private as some private diagnostics dont give exact results, just roughly where the fault is,
