please help tv/dvd combi

I have just pulled out from the back of my cupboard a maxim tv/dvd combi but have no idea where the remote for it is, so i popped along to tesco and bought a technika 6in1 remote.
This is were the problems begin i done the automatic search and i picked up the tv no problems i can move between channels turn the volume up and down but it will not work on the dvd part.
It will not let me play a dvd well do anything.
And for some stange reason there is no controls on the tv its self it is dependant on a remote.
Any suggstions at all please my son wants to watch finding nemo and i ont want to let him down.

technika are rubbish, we had the same problem, picked up one of these from argos - £15 and worked fine! different make tv though
