New monthly saver just launched, 4%:

Not the best monthly saver around, but not bad, and worth considering now that the Halifax have dropped the rate on their Regular Saver.

It's on the Cheshire and Dunfermline websites, but not the Derbyshire website -although there is a big sign about it in the window of my local branch. Only available over the counter.

To save people struggling with the terms here is a simplified summary:

Regular saver variable contributions £10 - £250 pm

    Until 1 Nov 2010: BOE rate + 3.5% = 4% currently (less if more than 1 withdrawal/missed payment)
    Until 1 Nov 2011: BOE rate + 1.5% = 2% currently
    From 1 Nov 2011: Variable

Good flexibility but the interest is only good if you believe the Bank of England rates will soon rise.

Sorry, forgot to put the interest rate in the title and can't amend it now.

The way regular savers have been withdrawn or had their interest rate slashed this is now a reasonable offer till 31 October 2010 even if base rates do not rise. However, the £250 monthly maximum means there's not that much to be made.

Can these be opened via post (downloading application form and sending off with cheque) or are they strictly 'branch-based' after all?

They are advertised as "exclusive to branch", so you can't technically open them by post. However, you could try posting the application with a cheque direct to one of the branches, rather than Head Office, as is usual with postal applications, and see if it's accepted. The worst that could happen is that they could return your cheque. However, there isn't an application form for this account on their websites, but you could try asking them to send you one.
  • Anyone know if I can open one at The Derbyshire and then open one at The Cheshire as well?

There's nothing to stop you, and no rule to say you can't. Although they are both part of Nationwide now they are still being run as separate institutions for the time being. Their accounts are all on different computer systems, so they wouldn't even know if you also had an account with the others.
