Have a look at serviced apartments in London. These can be booked by the night and are usually much better value for families than hotel rooms. I think it also works better for a family group to be all in one space.

For the five of you, you should be able to get a two bedroom apartment, with a sofa bed in the living area for around £200 per night.

For some ideas, search on laterooms.com as that will give you the option to show just apartments. The prices will not be good for next year but it will give you apartment complex names and reviews.

Minc Apartments or Marlin Apartments are two chains you could have a look at to see what sort of things are on offer.

Here is the link, it is still £12 for the 5th April, but you need to book quickly otherwise it will get booked up and the price rises with more bookings (except when they have a sale). Click on family room option under the double room and then amend search button at top and change rooms to 2 and put 1 adult and 2 children in 1 room and 1 adult and 1 in the other, click search then click on Southwark £12 and choose 2 family rooms at £12 and then add breakfast (it will show as charging for kids until you come to payment). You need to book travelodge saver rooms separatly to get the best price or add them individually to your basket, otherwise it charges all rooms at the dearest price for all nights if you block book.

Hi, thank you very much for your advice.

Ive booked 2 rooms for 3 nights and paid £270. Im going to buy a family railcard and hopefully book trains, so it will have cost a fraction of the £870 which we were going to pay for 2 nights.

Another alternative is the daily travel card which you buy for the zones you wish to travel in. Again cheaper to purchase after 9.30am-you can also purchase a £1 daily travelcard for the over 11 year olds (for off peak travel). The under 11's travel free. The advantage of the travelcard if purchased from a train station (not a tube one) is that it has the BR crows foot logo on it, that will allow you to get 2for1 entry into a number of London attractions if you show train ticket with a voucher from the site below eg, The Tower, zoo, London Dungeons etc. Waterloo which is about 10 minute walk from the SouthwarK Travel Lodge is a train station as is Victoria. Another alternative if using oyster is to buy a train ticket for each person for one stop and not use just to get the offer savings.

You could also use a combination of oyster one day if just doing a return journey eg. say to the Museums in Kensington and buy a one day Travel card another day to get the 2for 1 offers.

    hi

we are hoping to go by train, so we would be able to use those tickets, even if it isnt a day we are travelling?

could i print out 2 sets of vouchers in mine and my husbands name, so each of us can take one of the kids in and then just pay for our 3rd child?

    Thanks

Glad you got booked and hope that you have a great time. The museums are free and if you get the train from Southwark, go 2 stops to Westminster and then 4 stops on district or circle to South Kensington (so under 10 min journey) the Natural History and Science museums are by there with the Victoria and Albert across the road from the Science. About a 20 min walk away from there is Kensington Gardens and you can see the Albert Memorial and visit the Peter Pan park there (all free). The Eflin oak which is an old oak tree with figures in it is nearby. Spring is a nice time in the park and you could take a picnic if the weather is nice.

You can get a family river rover day pass for the boats £28 (hop on and off boats on the Thames) and do a cruise on the Thames, stop off at Greenwich and see the observatory, merdian line etc. It is nice to do a day boat trip and one at dusk as are different experiences.

If you want a cheap London tour there is a great bus tour info supplied here, it would just cost adults the price of a bus fare, it is back to front from where you are staying, but gives you an idea of attractions.

I would get the RV1 bus from near where you are staying in Southwark to Tower Hill and then hop off and on the 15 bus to Marble arch (as it goes past a lot of the landmarks such as St Pauls, Law courts etc). You are within walking distance from your hotel of a lot of the sights such as the Tate, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, The imperial war museum, Horse Guards parade etc.

Covent Garden is worth a visit to see the street performers, crafts etc and then walk to Trafalgar Square, you could go in to the National Gallery (free) when there. They also do reasonably priced food in the cafe in the crypt under the old St Martin's in the Field Church which is beside the Gallery (accessed via the glass dome beside the church itself).

Here are some other free things to do that may interest you.

Just a few ideas. There is so much to do, that I would advise you to plan what you would like to do and use the maps and journey planner on www.tfl.gov.uk to do this. You might also keep an eye out for theatre ticket deals, often you get the best deals by going to the theatre box office at 10am on the day of the show.

Note that if the OP is planning to visit in April 2010 that these 2 for 1 offers all currently seem to expire on 31/03/10 - however I suspect that there is a chance they may extend this deadline nearer the time, as I'm pretty sure that in the leaflet I had originally the expiry dates were given as 31/12/09, so it looks like they've already pushed them back three months...

Also if they are coming into London from Newcastle by train with return tickets they can use those tickets for the offers in the days in between, so there would be no need to buy paper Travelcards simply to qualify for the offers
