I haven't been on my computer since yesterday evening, but I'm sitting here in stitches at all your replies. Love the idea of a nice three course meal, or a roast hog at my desk !! Bit worried about the placard saying 'leave our baps alone', one of my managers can barely do that at the best of times, if you know what I mean !

Thankfully, there has been no attempt to eject me from the building yet, its not strictly the case that we are banned from bringing our own lunches, just that they make it good and awkward for those of us who choose to do it. Its all a bit of a laugh really, I knew that fellow moneysavers would appreciate my principled stand!!

Happily, I am finishing work in about six weeks to go on maternity leave, at which stage I can eat my lunch howsoever I please...assuming junior gives me the chance to!

    cheers everyone !

I bring my own lunch in every day - it's so much cheaper than buying but we are lucky enough to have a fridge, toaster, microwave and kettle. Plus work supplies us with coffee, tea and milk free.

Just stumbled across this thread and I thought I should let you know that according to the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work regulations your employer is legally obliged to provide a rest area with tables and chairs, facilities for making hot drinks and storing and heating food, and they are not allowed to make you pay for these facilities, or restrict use to those who buy food on premises (although they are often very quiet about this, meaning many people assume that they have to buy food in canteens because they've never been told otherwise). You can go to https://www.hse.gov.uk and get information on health safety and welfare at work matters such as this (there's a few phone numbers you can ring for advice there too). If this is a problem you can bring it up with your Safety Representative (Your Health & Safety Information posters should tell you who this is) and ask them to bring it up with your employer on your behalf.

Hope this helps some of you, unfortunatly it won't stop people teasing you for being the only one who brings in their own teabags!

I love this thread, made me laugh so much.

Well I take a stand too. I always bring in packed lunches and have even suggested a teapot to save on individual teabags in cups.

Thriftylady - why dont you take a kettle/thermos of hot water in with you and make your own tea coffee? Or just make it in the morning and keep it in your thermos during the day. Or you could have a tea kitty. We had that in one of our offices as we were fed up with paying 40p per cup.

5p per cup used to pay for all drinks/milk and biscuits too. - now thats a bargain!!

Mmmm, this thread is making me all nostalgic for my last job. We were able to have a two course lunch, either a hot meal or a salad or sandwiches plus pudding. We regularly had duck breast or sirloin steak on the menu and I even had guinea fowl on a couple of occasions. The cost - nothing, it was all free.

You too could have this, just go for a job in a Cambridge College - the more exotic meals were left overs from the Fellows (lecturers) meals the previous night. The downside - very easy to put on weight.

I'm now back to packed lunches but at least we have a fridge, kettle and microwave.

Ooh, Thriftylady, I didn't realise you were in an "interesting" condition! Congratulations!

Of course, this means that you can milk it for all it's worth. No one's going to argue with a visibly pregnant lady - not if you grasp your tummy and wobble slightly while giving that "I think the baby's starting" expression (you know, wide-eyed in wonderment and amazement while cooing strangely) if they even assume to give you a hard time! It's only natural that you only trust your own kitchen to give Junior the best start in life, after all.

Mutter something about cravings as you unpack the coal and cranberry jelly sandwiches from your handbag and watch them all leave you alone.
 What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?
