can't get aol and bt modem software to install.

Got my new dell desktop the other day .. with Xp... .. and wasn't surprised that just moving a handful of wires from the back of my old dell...into this new one ... wouldn't be just that easy ! .

.. i can't get my aol isp installed . I've had a number of premium rate phone conversations with them over the weekend .. but as always with them... trying to converse with someone at the other side of the world is impossible .

It seems as though i've got the problem with the computer not recognising my bt voyager 105 modem .

When i try and install the software for it .. it is refusing ..

first error message box says "error loading newdev.dll"

but if i click through and try to install it , after a few minutes i then get an error message
" bt voyager setup wizard .... administator priviledges are required to install , uninstall or configure the software "

Aol say that's something to do with the computer software .

Any thoughts ?

    Windows XP?

    BT Voyager modems?

    AOL?

To address my concerns in that order:

Why XP? Didn't you know Windows 7 was coming out in a few days?

    XP is old.

Why are you using a modem? Get yourself a router/modem, plug it into your computer with a ethernet cable, and you're done.

And last but not least: why, in the name of all that's holy, are you using AOL?

There are better browsers out there, better email clients, and better IM applications than the crappy ones that come with AOL.

And what's more, they're compatible with AOL's services.

Are you following the AOL Voyager 105 installation guide and downloading the driver from that page, or are you using the driver CD that AOL originally supplied?
  • baldur .. using as per your link . ..it was whilst trying to install it that i get the error messages .

Marty J .... it is simply that as an older , non techie person .. it is far easier and i am far happier sticking with what i know and am used to .

I normally have no problem with my £9.99 a month aol package which i've had for 10 years now ..... i find their browser ...and email facilities fine ( not that i know what anybodys else are like ! ..) .. but sending emails and surfing the internet are just fine with aol for me .
I wouldn't know what an IM application was ! . And "better browser" .. my understanding ..maybe wrong !.. is a browser is just that box that you type your www. etc in and up pops the website.

A bt voyager 105 modem .. easy answer .. when i got broadband 5+ years ago .. that's what aol sent me to plug in so it works ... and it has every day till now !. Again .. no point /no benefit in changing ?

Similarly .. i am used to windows xp ... which again .. for surfing.. for emails ... and for lots of Office word & exel that i do ... i know my way around and everything works fine .. so i don't "need" Vista .. 7 or anything else differrent .

Of course i'm still using Microsoft office 2003 .. know it well .. it works ... so why do i need 2007 version !.

It's just that .. as i'm sure for many who are not tech minded .. then "if it's not broke...then don't fix it" is often the easist option .

Sure you'll be impressed with my nokia 3330 !! ... but when i do loads of phone calls ... a dozen texts .. and have no need for camera .. or internet etc ... then why do i need anything differrent ? ... and being a good mse ... it cost me £28 on ebay nearly 5 years ago .. and works fine ... with my o2 package of 800 minutes that has a nett cost of £3.66 a month !!

"getting the job done .. at lowest possible cost ". always my motto.

Just to prove my point .. unlike me to buy from a shop .. but needing advice .. went to local Currys today .. said problem with voyager modem and people telling me i needed a router thing ....

They sold me a Belkin N wireless router .. i look at instructions and it says it needs plugging into a modem ... what modem ??? !!! ... surely not my old voyager 105 ??

So i'm stuck.. baffled .. confused .. and more fed up than ever before !! .

    See my point ? !

What they should have sold you was an ADSL modem/router - Currys have the Belkin N150, which would do the job - http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1951766791.1256053068@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccgfadeijddhdhdcflgceggdhhmdgmj.0&page=Product&sku=740910

Take it back for a refund. Your ISP should give you a wireless router for free if you ask!

Were you logged in as an Administrator when trying to install the modem? see here for more info.

You don't need to use the AOL software to connect using AOL broadband. Change your (wrong) router for a wireless modem/router (next time go to a knowledgable independent shop, not Currys). Then you just need to enter your AOL settings into the router interface to connect.
You can then get your email using Outlook Express (which comes as part of XP) and your internet via Internet Explorer (if you must) or Firefox. No need to suffer the dredfaul clunky AOL interface.
I have to say that I think buying XP new in late 2009 is very short sighted. As of Thursday it will be 2 generations behind as an OS, and Microsoft will stop supporting it well within the life of your new PC. It's a good OS but it's had it's day as a 'new' choice.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
