Data protection

I'm not sure if this is the right forum.

I have just received a phone call from a friend of mine who is trying to retrieve a quote off the moneysupermarket website, for car insurance. She entered her email and password - the details of the car came up as the wrong make but correct model. When she got to the personal details page, all of these details were mine and not hers. My name, address, date of birth, etc.. where in my name. My friend lives miles away from me and I have never even been on her computer. I am baffled as to how this has happened. She logged out three times and logged back in trying to retrieve her quote and the same thing happened.

I am really concerned that my details are floating over the moneysupermarket website. I have attempted to call them but their offices are closed. I am going to send them email but wanted advice as to what rights I have concerning data protection. It is a blessing that my personal details appear with someone I know, as this information could easily been used for fraud. If this is even the case as it could have happened before to with others I do not know.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Many thanks

  • I'd contact moneysupermarket themselves and ask what's happened - these things shouldn't happen unless there's a system glitch, or your friend accidentally entered your email address and password by mistake (it's possible). From what you say, it sounds like an account system glitch.

I've had a similar thing with TalkTalk where my login suddenly vanished, and someone else called me and said that they could see my account details as well as theirs. TalkTalk rectified it quickly for me.

They must rectify the situation as soon as possible and ensure that both your and your friend's records are up to date and accurate. Best to try calling them tomorrow morning, as early as you can, as emails can get "lost".

Either you used your friends account in the past to get a quote and it has remembered your details or your friend accessed your account thinking it was hers.

There is no chance from the hundreds of thousands if not millions of accounts on Moneysupermarket that your friend happened to get yours due to an IT glitch.

For some reason yours and her account have crossed over. Work out how and reverse it.

I have never used my friend's account or vice versa, or as stated before been to her house let alone used her computer. So there is no way that the information should be displaying there.

Agreed. Sounds like she has an auto populate function on her PC, that has completed the fields with your details. The chances of it being some random coincidence must be close to one in a million.
    Gone ... or have I?

Clearly but instead we are going to blame someone else with a completely unfeasible explaination. No doubt the Sue brigade will be demanding she report them to the data commisioner soon
