Frankie - we had one account once and thats how we got into so much trouble- not displined enough! Now on a fixed term repayment although we have been burnt with fixing it before the interest rate drop :rolleyes:but at least we know what we have to pay oh well.
I do tell OH he is lucky because I am not particularly interested in shoes - got feet like an ugly sister, clothes I am overweight and trying hard on slimming world so don't want to waste money buying things that hopefully won't fit me in a few months, or make up and having my hair done - he really doesn't know how lucky he is!
Foxglove - you are so right!
Kittie - I know my mum and dad survived the 70s by being careful they used to grow veg and literally weed by touchlight to keep things going - They don't know the full extent of our debts and I feel ashamed that I haven't managed things properly in the past. I really think there should be a long compulsory course looking into finances in secondary school that deals with budgeting, interest rates, apr's etc..
Anyway must start the tea!

I should imagine that once they got over the shock, they would actually be VERY PROUD that you are tackling your debts by living a more frugal way instead of opting for a debt recovery order or simmilar

I can identifiy with what you are saying as I have big trotters and larger-than-I'd-like figure . . . but don't fall into the trap of not allowing yourself to have anything nice until you reach your target weight.
Please value and honour yourself in the here and now.
May I suggest that you treat yourself to the occasional inexpensive treat - a pretty scarf or new top - will be a nice boost to your spirits and keep you on track to keep losing.

As this isn't a strictly Old Style thread, I'll move it to the Budgeting Board

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
He also put my salter digital scales on top of the mircowave without me knwing and now they have water in the display and just show EE!!! Does anyone have any ideas how to weigh stuff without weighing stuff - ah ha I could use american sites and use cups - do they do that with marg too!?! - I wanted to bake some fairy cakes for lunch boxes as I have eggs to use up!!
Try new batteries because when my
scales need the batteries changing I get
ee showing on mine.If you still think its
moist inside, put it in the airing cupboard
or somewhere warm for a couple of weeks,
Done this with mobile phones,tv remote
and a radio all started working again
once dried out.:j:j:j0 -
Thanks rosekitten i will try new batteries!
I am very confused about why the thread has been moved - yes we have talked about budgeting, but also reducing reusing and recycling and meal plansetc..
Will anyone find it on the budeting board??!!Plan to PAD Everyday 2024Credit Card - £3662.99 (int free to 11/11/25) -PAD TotalsJan 2024 -0 -
Hmm. I seem to be in the minority here. I only use my credit card because:
1) it's a cashback card, which means everyt penny I spend on it is getting me something back (only 1%, but it adds up!)
2) I am less likely to spend the money if I don't have it in my pocket. I'm far more likely to buy a snack or a Coke when I pass the newsagents if I have loose change in my pocket, instead of a credit card.0 -
I've found it on the budgeting board!
I use cash for my budgeting, I'm a student so not much to budget for. I have a set amount each week that I can spend, and I take it out from the cash machine every monday. If it isn't in my purse, I'll have trouble spending it! Stops me wasting money.0 -

Melissa, don't run yourself down, I bet your hubby knows what a:A DIAMOND:A he has. I too have never bothered with make up etc which drives my lovely 88year old MIL mad bless she is a real style queen, totally agree with Sandi Toksvig last Sat on News Quiz when she said quote 'she is not a size zero she is a shape zero', I chuckled so much that I spilled my tea:rotfl:. Like your mum and dad me and grumpy grandad survived the 70's the hard way. Trust me I bet like us they too had some very scary financial moments, due to the then house price crash [yes it has happened before] I remember having to hand keys back in to our house [our 3 were just little ones at the time]. However we moved town so grumpy could get a better job then rented until by dint of careful managment [me being stingy] managed to save for another house several years later in the early 80's, and we are still here.0 -
I must be some kind of exception - I'm hopeless with cash. I spend everything on a debit card - I'm monthly paid, so I find that going through my statement (all 12 pages last time!) helps me identify where i've spent money i shouldn't, or could just be a bit smarter. Then I take this money and put it into an instant access account on payday, the rest goes into a dat to day account seperate from my bills account, and I use that.0
