After finalizing a dvd-rw, can I format it again?

Hi there,

Just getting used to a panasonice dmr es10s dvd recorder (good machine) and also getting used to all the different blank dvd mdeia formats.

My question is this, if you finalize a dvd-rw is it possible to reformat after doing this and use it again. I know that you can format and reuse before finalizing but what happems if you do finalize? I tried to do it but the dvd recorder give me message
"after finalizing the dvd will become play only"

any ideas please?

thanks

joe

You can always remove what’s on a DVD-RW. If you have Roxio or Nero software, there should be an option to erase a DVD. This will reset a DVD-RW to its initial state. And, if you go for the long/full erase, it’ll remove all the data currently on it.

Yes you can... if you finalise it you will have to format it before you can put anything different on the disk. If you dont finalise it you will be able to continue to add items to it but some DVD drives/ players etc wont be able to play it.

    Hi,

Well I have no dvd writer on my computer, so anything I can do has to be done on standalone dvd recorder. I suppose only sure way to test is to finalise a dvd-rw, then see if it can re-format it again, but I very much doubt that is possible since I just rang electricial shop where i bought it and they say, "once you finalise thats it, becomes read only"

Sorry, that’s me not bothering to find out what a DMR-ES10 is. :o

That just means you won’t be able to make any further additions or edits to the current contents of the disc. To reuse a finalized DVD-RW disc, it has to be reformatted, completely removing what’s already there. See Erasing all the contents of a disc – Format Disc in the Disc Management section of the product’s manual.

If the electrical stores name begins with either a C or a D then ignore it.

The W part of the disk title means that it can be rewritten on - I cannot say for certain that your DVD-r can format it as I dont own that model (though the above post suggests it can) but certainly if you put it in a PC's DVD-r drive it will be able to format it.

if it can read it,it can probably erase it.Mine can anyway(not the same model).I imagine when it erases,it also formats if there is no format option in the disc menu.

    Hi again,

Well decided to test it and so finilized the dvd-rw and then played it in a stand alone cheapie alba player. Played ok. Tried to re-format it again in panasonic dmr es10 recorder and at first I couldn/t get it to format, but then hey presto it worked.

So dvd-rw can be formated again after they are finalized!!

    thanks for all replies
