What car for £5k?
Hi,
I'm looking at buying a 2nd hand car for a maximum £5k after having a crash.
The car needs to be a diesel family saloon/hatchback and I'm currently looking at either a Mazda 6 or Ford Mondeo as you seem to get a lot of car for the money. I'd like an Audi A4 or BMW 320, however the milage tends to be high when looking at this budget.
I'm thinking about attending a BCA auction in Blackbush and was wondering what I could get for my money here, does anyone have any idea what i could get for my money? When would be the best day to go? Would anyone recommend anything other than the cars i've suggested above?
thanks

Toyota Avensis or a Skoda Octavia are about that size, and are both good cars.0

For £5k you could get a passat highline 2003-2004, with heated leather seats, air con, 1.9 TDI engine 45 mpg+, nice cruiser car, loads of rear leg room and massive boot.0

The reason some taxi drivers use octavias is because they can be specified as bog standard, no air con. elec. windows etc., so there is less to go wrong.
More Mondeos are used round here for taxis, much more room than an octavia, and passat's look bigger too.

go to the auction, but go a few times to get your bearings, auctions like BCA are fast paced affairs.
but expect to pay a grand less than the supermarkets0 -
Basically under the bonnet the Audi, VW and Skoda estates are all the same cars, with different chassis. The Audis will cost more to buy for like for like mileage of the VW's and Skodas. Skodas best value. VW's will give a lot of luxuries as standard if you go for a model like the sport, trendline or highline.
I think the Octavias rate as one of the most reliable cars in which.0 -
There are loads of diesel mondeos out there. £4/5k will get you an 06/56 plate from a dealer. I've got an 05 plate 1.8 petrol lx and it has most of the gadgets as standard. Its a huge car and can hold loads. If you like your interiors to be relatively muted (i.e. less flashing gimicks) then the mondy is the one for you (Skodas are also less flashy)0

You could look at the 1.9 TDI Skoda Superb (seen loads used as Taxi's but they tend to be the lower classic range). Loads of room with big boot. Go for comfort / elegance range as they come with loads of gadgets.
I bought the 1.8T petrol recently and really happy with it (you can lose the kids in the back even with front seats well back) and lots more car for money than the Mazda 6, which is what I originally looked for.0 -

I think the Octavia is a little too small in the rear.
My 16 month old son can touch the back of my wife's passenger seat with his feet and she doesn't have her seat all the way back like I do (6ft 2)
If they'd sacrificed a foot of bootspace (which is massive) for rear space it would have been brilliant.
Considering a larger car (mondeo) for this very reason.
Superb is much bigger in the back and also worth considering0
