Sorry if this is an obvious question!

We currently get gas from e.on and electricity from npower. We are switching to Scottish Power and applied on the website and they have said "we'll be in touch"

What happens now. Presumably they send out a form we have to sign and send back?

Don't believe the TV Ads - Switching can be a nightmare if something goes wrong
The system is supposed to be virtually hands free so far as the customer is concerned, You will get 'welcome' letters from Scot Power and eventually they will ask for your meter readings and tell you the date your supplies will switch to them - this is the moment to exert some control - Write a joint letter to Scot Power and n'power, confirming the meter readings you have given and the switch date, and, the type of Gas meter you have, which will marked on the front as to whether it is either Metric or Imperial.
There is no guarantee that things will not go wrong, but if it does at least you are in the clear when the s**t starts flying.
One other thing - Have you looked at the status of your large lump of annual Direct Debit discount from n'power? - If you leave before you have made 12 consecutive monthly D/D's since it was last credited on your bill, you will lose it.

We've been paying npower since we bought the house in January this year. They supplied the previous owners.

So you are saying in addition to clearing the current debt we're going to be landed with another bill?
