Laptop screen replacement

Hi, I purchased a laptop 13 months ago (from Tesco) and the screen is now faulty , I know that it is now out of the 12 month guarantee period but someone told me that there was new European legislation that stated electrical goods have to last a minimum of 2 years.
Do I have any rights regarding getting Tesco to repair this laptop ?
Before I approach Tesco can anyone clarify this for me ?
Thanks in advance.

tell whoever told you that they are talking rubbish and you are infact wiser than the so actually seek out info on this and not just accepting it
its a load of rubbish to put it bluntly
what you need to do is contact consumers direct and do a bit of digging up on the sale of goods act, paying particular attention to section 12 and "of satisfactory quality" and "durability".
SOGA gives you 6 years (up to to be precise) of protection, giving you the right to a repair, replacement or refund depending on what the retailer decides.
But after 6 months, the onus is on you to prove the goods are faulty with an independent technicians report confirming there was a fault from manufacture.
as i said, consumer direct are your friends here.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -

I think this is what the OP was asking for, read this article. I don't know how far your would get quoting this to Tesco, but every little helps, but I still think you have to prove after six months that it is a manufacturing problem.

However, the SOGA already provides better than two years' protection, so for UK residents the EU directive is irrelevant. The customer in the article might have made his point to Tesco more quickly if he had cited the SOGA instead of the EU directive.
This is one of those confusions which keeps coming up.0 -

There's another head shaped dent in my wall....Squirrel!If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Obviously "dreamypuma" and "Esqui" are experts in the field of consumer rights and feel the need to pour scorn on anyone who dares ask a question that they think is pointless.
All I wanted was a little bit of help about something that I wasn't sure about and these two could only offer their input of , and I quote "aarrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! " and "There's another head shaped dent in my wall....".
Well I will watch out for your usernames in the domain that I am an expert in (Plumbing) and will take great pleasure in "HELPING" you with any problems you have.:mad:0 -
Did you get any joy from Tesco? It is polite to provide updates on threads.Gone ... or have I?0

No joy from Tesco as it was over 1 year old.
So out of interest I contacted Acer just to see if they could point me in the right direction as to what might be causing the problem , I didn't expect much , but to my surprise they told me that it was still under warranty. This I questioned and they confirmed it twice , once over the phone and once by e-mail. They said the warranty runs out on 4-Nov-2009 even though I purchased it on 4-Oct-2008 and they would undertake any repairs that were needed.
So it is now hopefully getting repaired as we speak.0 -
Good luck with it then, but advise your friend to read up on SOGA and to drop the european legislation. Regardless of the Tesco or Acer warranty, you would 've been able to claim against them under SOGA - onus would be on you to prove fault which amounts to seeking independent advice. Tesco's response is standard retailer fob off.
To score brownie points on your mate, you could also go on to tell him that if you'd bought the laptop on your credit card, your credit card company would be equally liable.
Forgive the chaps' frustrations but there have been numerous posts about the european gumpf on here and it adds to the confusion, the media haven't helped either. Your crime was that you didn't do a search on the forum first for either the european bit, or faulty laptops - there's been a few laptops on here in the last week.0
