Tax query

I was made redundant in December 2008 and did not work again until July 2010. When in employment I have always been paid under PAYE.
I am wondering if there is any action required by me to ensure I receive my full tax-free personal allowance of c. £6k for each of the 2 affected tax years?

Unlikely given the dates you refer to (assume you mean July 2009 BTW?)
All your pay would have been taxed under your personal tax code. These codes are usually 3 digits followed by a letter (usually L) As an example. 603 L would mean you are running a TFA of £6030 per annum - check your old payslips and see what your code is to be sure

I'm not a tax expert but....
By my reckoning, you could have overpaid tax for the year 2008-2009, as you monthly PAYE deductions while you were in work would (assuming you have a standard tac code) have been calculated on the assumption that you were going to be earning that monthly salary for the whole of the year.
However, I guess it's possible that you could already be getting any overpayment refunded by an adjustment to your tax code for this year. What tax code are you currently on ?0 -
Sorry...I did mean July 2009. Oops!
Tax code is "0647L !!!". On my first month's payslip it said "0647L MTH1".0 -
Can anyone else shed any light on this, given the tax code above?
Any further assistance at all would be much appreciated!0
